Speed and line stability used to be fine at 3.7Mbit, then I randomly had major disconnection issues, speeds dropped to 192Kbit,
Chorus couldn't fix it for 2 weeks despite replacing the jackpoints, installing a splitter, and me swapping routers.
Eventually the line seemed to come stable by itself during the time Chorus was striking (so no idea what 'fixed' it) but speed never
went above 2.2Mbit after that.
Later, a Chorus Technician measured line speeds, distances, checked everything and came to the conclusion that something was
indeed wrong.
Apparently there was 4Mbit at the cabinet, but after 200 metres down to my house, the speed had dropped off more than it
should have. He said that tests of the line indicated it was "perfect" and because of this Telecom wouldn't do anything
to try and fix it. I gave up trying to get it fixed after that.
Fast-forward to July 2010, the cabinet up the road is replaced with a new one supporting the latest ADSL2+ technologies, and at
only 200 metres away, I expect to get at least 20Mbit.
What I did end up with was 15Mbit sync rate and 13Mbit actual download rate, but that isn't the big issue.
For the first couple of weeks, everything seemed just fine. But since then I have a problem when powering on my router in the
morning, it won't connect up (properly). This doesn't always happen but happens enough to be annoying.
It seems to believe that it has ADSL sync, but there is no PPP connection.
Normally if I restart it, or let it disconnect and try again by itself, it will get up and running just fine on the 2nd try. After that,
it's usually pretty much rock stable.
I am currently using my Dynalink RTA1320, but I had the problem with the Thomson ST536v6 too.
I've attached a couple of screenshots of the router's ADSL status page in case anything looks interesting.
