In a prvate email list I participate on there was some discussion about about switching handsets to 3G mode only and battery life.

One of the participants pointed out that operators can determine the interval the handset should poll for 3G/2G networks.

Is this something Telecom has configured in their SIM?

Yes, but my question should really be "knowing that XT is 3G only, did Telecom put a timer long enough to reduce power usage, radio activity?"

The timer on the SIM would be set for many hours not like 5 minutes

That's what you and I would expect it to be. I wanted to know if there's firm knowledge that that's how it is on Telecom's XT SIMs.
