Thought I would start a new thread (can't see comment anywhere else?) as I see that the Galaxy has this morning appeared on the Telecom website.  Have already got my order in with our company provider to get my hands on one soonish.  Will be interested to see if there are any issues specific to the version that Telecom have launched.
[Edit]
In the time it took me to type it up I see we already have one!!

Got in touch with Connect straight away after my first post, and had one delivered to my desk by 1:30 p.m.!  Currently sitting on the charger, but haven't had any time to play yet.  Should have had a bit of a thrash by tomorrow morning!

Froyo 2.2 is due on November 12th. I wonder if the Telecom variant will receive it as well. I mucked around with one today and really nice. I'm still deciding between this and the HTC Desire HD, of which there isnt a Telecom version... yet (850/2100 3G).

I mentioned last week in the main Galaxy S thread that the Telecom Galaxy would be available from today.

Let us know if Froyo updates automatically on November 12th!

- Telstra HTC Touch Pro2 - Energy ROM WM6.5.5 20 Oct/Cyanogen Mod Froyo 2.2 - R.I.P
- AT&T Galaxy S Captivate 16GB on XT (now with brother)
- Samsung Galaxy S2 on XT- Runs ICS 4.0.3 Resurrection Remix 9.2
- Business Hours - Work In The Electricity Industry, After Hours - DJ/Turntablist - Will Scratch Vinyl For Free'
- What's next??? S3?

Will this version work on Vodafone also?

So this version is "tri-band (850/1900/2100) UMTS/HSPA".
Vodafone has 2100 UMTS but limited.

I'm assuming this will be pretty poor usability? I'm just hoping to use it on both Telecom and Vodafone.

The Telecom version of the Galaxy S will work on Vodafone, however Telecom would not be able to support your device whilst it was being used with another provider.

There are myriad discussions on these fora about the differences from many who know much more about this than me.  But, essentially, this phone is 850/2100 3G (don't worry about the 1900).  XT's main 3G frequency is 850MHz and uses 2100 as "infill" in major centres only.

Voda uses 2100 as its main 3G frequency with 900 Mhz as its extended range 3G frequency.  Check http://www.vodafone.co.nz/coverage/ for a coverage map.  You will see that 2100 coverage is not so flash and you will need 900MHz to get decent coverage across the country, outside more populated areas.

So, in short, don't get it if you want to use Vodafone - get the 900/2100 version that is perfectly suited to the Voda and related networks (2 degrees etc)

Thanks joeksemail :)
It is for development and they want to be able to use them on both. Personally I want to stay off Vodafone.

/me buys 10.

Edit: We have a Vodafone tower on site, according to the coverage map good "3g".

So, despite my earlier comments, if its just sitting in one place being used for development, and that one place has good 2100MHz coverage from Voda, then it will work fine with a Voda SIM in it - just won't get much 3G coverage on Voda outside those populated areas noted on the coverage map (then you can slip the XT Sim in it and go travelingWink!!)

Now to decide for my personal phone. Get the Galaxy, or wait a few weeks for the LG 7Q (which I wish was the HD7)?

I cant really give a fair view as I havent used the LG 7Q as of yet but if it helps the Samsung Galaxy is AMAZING Laughing and Im extremely fussy with phones. It says something when I changed out my Blackberry 9700 for this machine. I honestly cant stress how much I love it.

But for me personally I think WP7 is to little to late by Microsoft and I think they have done well with the PR side of the launch and creating all the hype but I dont think it will beat the Galaxy

Froyo seems to be rolling out via Kies for all Galaxy S owners. Will the Telecom version be upgraded also? If not, it means I'll have to root mine to get Android 2.2, which I dont really want to be doing. I've been flashing WM handsets for years but this is new territory!

I would assume it will get 2.2 ...

I know HTC did their updates by region, the Telstra HTC Desire just got the 2.2 update recently.

You could try dropping an email to Samsung and ask them ... ?

I have a galaxy S, and it works well with no lag (I only have around 30 apps though) and will let you know if/when the 2.2 firmware comes on Kies. Buy the phone, it rocks!
