My son's 3gs was stolen today. I've had a look in here and on 2 degrees site and can't find anything about blacklisting the imei so it can't be used. I've already blacklisted it on vodafone (he was on prepay with them) but I don't want the little puke who took it to be able to use it on any other network here.

Can anyone tell me what to do? I'm in Auckland, Papatoetoe.

edit: I phoned telecom help desk, got Manila and they said they had no idea.)

(sorry for double post in 2 degrees forum as well, but I need to know for them too.)

That's horrible :(

I'm not so sure that Telecom have such an IMEI blocking service. This may have changed though.

Hi there, sorry to read your phone was stolen.

Just to confirm TNZ have a block blocking service for devices that have connected to the XT network since it launched.

How they handle requests to block devices connected on other networks I am not 100% sure.

Jaidev should be able to assist.

You will need to block it across all three networks.  Unfortunately though, even with the blacklisting the thief will still have a slightly higher spec'd iPod Touch

Not a helpful response right now, but a little bird told me a couple of months ago our mobile telcos are working together on creating a single database for IMEI blocking...

I didn't say anything ;)

That kinda news is good because at least the market players can put aside competitive differences to establish something like that for the benefit of the public. The benefits of something like that are endless. Spam texters, criminal offenders, stolen phones...

Could have sworn johnr or a telecom rep mentioned this on the forum a few months ago in another similar topic?

As nothing has been released to the press / share market it's difficult to give more details. But I will say TNZ / VF are still testing the synchronisation of blocked IMEI numbers as stated before.

Going slightly off topic from the original post, I will comment on how the standard approach to blocking and sharing of IMEI’s should work.

Each Mobile provider maintains there own EIR (Equipment Identity Register) and has an optional interface with a Central EIR (CEIR). A standard EIR has a import / export capabilities to send / receive IMEI’s from other EIR’s and CEIR’s.

I believe Europe and the US each have a CEIR setup for all Mobile providers to interface with and share IMEI’s with multiple Mobile providers. In NZ (Possible Oz as well) there isn’t a CEIR for all Mobile Providers to interface with, each Mobile Provider has to connect to each Mobile Provider, as is the case with TNZ / VF.

In the future you could expect:
Each NZ Mobile Provider will set up a 1:1 link with each NZ Mobile Provider (Not efficient and high overheads)
A CEIR setup in NZ / Australasia (High start up costs, political pit falls possible about ownership)
NZ Mobile Providers interface with other CEIR’s (Most likely, low link up costs and use of existing capability)

Assumptions:
VF might already being interfacing with other CEIR’s through their parent company in the UK and using the European CEIR.
If so it means once TNZ link up with VF, TNZ could block all IMEI’s across NZ and Europe.
If the European CEIR is linked into the US CEIR you have the states covered as well!
Asia has a CEIR and linked in somewhere…
