Hi There!

I sold a client a Toshiba R700 Notebook with 3G Modem built into it and it's been working fine on the VF Network. He has decided to move to Telecom and they have given him a USB Modem which he removed the simcard from and put into the Notebook and it won't go.

The wireless manager is showing it's Telecom and I can send text messages from the toshiba wireless manager, but I can't connect to the internet. It just shows disconnected right away after I click connect.

I can get it operational with the modem Telecom gave him.

Toshiba have told me it's CDMA 850 capable but I can't find spec's to agree with this, and I thought it was like diesel and petrol you have to pick on and stick with it? You can't have a device that do both?

Are there any ultra portables that support Telecom XT built in, or is it all provided via USB?

it might be Wcdma compatible but i assume you will still need to check the APN, just like a cell phone

this is where a signature goes

F3607GW is what I believe it is. Telecom are saying they won't support the configuration unless the simcard is in one of their USB Modems.

In my experience Lenovo ThinkPads with 3G (most of them include or support 3G internally) have great support for XT, Vodafone and 2degrees. I have Telecom / Gen-i seem happy to support ThinkPads on their XT Network.

Based on this, it looks like it's supported. Unless I am misunderstanding.

Paulspain: What cards are in the thinkpads? The thinkpads I can see online use the same identical 3G Units?

It looks like it *might be*. The bands are listed as 2100/1900/850 OR 2100/1900/900. Without knowing which you have, I can't tell whether it's supported or not (you need 850 for Telecom).

Edit: Just noticed that you have successfully sent texts, so it sounds like you must have the correct 850 MHz version.

The current ThinkPads have the Gobi2000 - previous ones support 850/2100 I believe.

I have a old Dell D630 with one of their 5520 HSDPA Cards it only runs at 3.6MB/s but it works a treat.  It's just a re-badged Novatel/Merlin XU870 but as a WWAN card.

The think you want to look for is WCDMA 850 or UMTS 850, if it says GSM 850 it won't work (but those will be very old cards!).

Otherwise the majority of datacards also work at 2100, and so long as you are in the CBD's you'll be fine on Telecom too.  But in-building 2100 can be rather patchy.
