I've just spotted this on a Gen-i FAQ page (why doesn't Telecom post this kind of information on its own site is another story):

EVDO closure 30th November 2010

On November 30 2010 we will be closing the part of our CDMA 3G data network known as EVDO. This is the faster data component of the CDMA network and enables customers to access the Internet and Email from their Smartphone or data card / T-Stick.

What are we doing?

On November 30 2010 we will be closing the faster 3G data service on our CDMA network, also known as EVDO. Customers with a CDMA phone will continue to be able to make and receive calls and text messages. However, customers currently accessing Email, the Internet and downloadable content via a T-Stick or smart-phone using EVDO will experience considerably slower data speeds.

I am unable to establish a data connection after EVDO closure

If you are experiencing issues with data connection after the EVDO network closure then download our data connection file (PDF 150kb)

Why are we doing this?

We have chosen to close this service for a number of reasons. The data service on XT is considerably more advanced and offers a faster mobile broadband experience in more places for customers. In addition, we require the frequency spectrum that EVDO uses for the ongoing development of XT.

The release of EVDO spectrum is part of a series of changes that were always planned as part of the XT network development and expansion.

Will I be better off moving to XT?

XT provides mobile broadband (data) users with a superior 3G mobile broadband service when compared to the EVDO service on CDMA, and delivers wider coverage of 3G data services.
In addition, if you have an HSPA+ enabled device you will have access to HSPA+ data speeds.
XT data offers also provide the majority of customers with better value for money.

What does this mean to me (your customer)?

Voice and Text is not affected.

Customers continuing to access Email, the Internet and downloadable content via a T-Stick or smart-phone using EVDO will experience considerably slower data speeds after the 3G data service is closed.

Where I use my mobile broadband service, XT coverage is not as good as CDMA. Is there anything you can do for me?

If your device also supports Voice and Text - these services are unaffected by this closure.

If you continue to use your current device for data the speeds will slow considerably from the date of closure.

Over the past few months we have done a lot of work to improve the XT network and have an ongoing programme of work to continue to improve the coverage for our network
There are various options available to enhance your coverage. See your dealer for further details.

What are the XT Upgrade Offers?

To make it easy to move to XT, existing EVDO data users have been given a fantastic offer that contributes to the cost of a new XT handset. In many instances, a new XT data device will be free when you sign up to a new 24 month term. These offers are exclusively for customers that have used EDVO data services in the past 12 months. The offers in that letter will run until 31 March 2011.

Jeez, cut off the best bit of CDMA first!
And I got no letter either because I used data on TelstraClear!
Looks like my WM6.5/Android Okta Touch is going to live in the drawer instead of going to the mrs as the android phone she wanted.

I'm really surprised this hasn't received more publicity. It's hardly breaking news and has already been discussed by mainstream media in recent weeks.

Telecom need the spectrum to be able to deploy upgrades such as dual carriers on the XT network, without this they're at a disadvantage to Vodafone who are very close to deploying their 28.8 network now that their fibre upgrades are all being cut over.

Yep could have been more widely published... but still a good way to lead folks over to XT.
Although you'd have thought they have probably tried to migrate all their data customers over by now.

Sorry for sounding like a very un-geekish geek.... But what is the dual carriers thing?

... Thanks

It has been published at lot until about a month ago.  I suppose if you don't make too much noise about it, and no one noticed when it goes away it can't been made into something it's not by the media.

Dual Carriers means that Telecom will be able to offer 28MB upstream and downstream service since they will have soo much frequency capacity around the 850-888Mhz range.  Currently they are limited to the 14MB HSPA+.  But post EVDO shutdown they will have a larger range to play with.

To summarise dual carriers briefly: it's a case of essentially having two cellsites that transmit from a single site which in turn doubles the capacity of a site. Devices that support dual carriers with MIMO antennas can connect to both carriers and double the speeds that are available from a regular single carrier network.

To be able to do this you obviously need spare spectrum, and Telecom don't have a lot spare at present since CDMA sucked a lot with the 1X network and EVDO sitting on top of this. Once CDMA is shut down fully in 2012 life will be even easier for Telecom with even more spare 800Mhz spectrum.

Currently they are limited to the 14MB HSPA+.

All of Telecom's XT sites support HSPA+ which enables downloading at up to 21 Mbps.

Of course to get close to that speed you need to be the only active user in the cell and be located in pretty good coverage conditions.

In theory if Telecom deployed Dual-Cell that speed could be increased to 42 Mbps - now we're talking!

Our Gen-i account manager has kept us well informed and we've decommissioned all devices that made use of the EVDO spectrum. Unfortunately, some of my users work from home and their homes are in areas where the XT network is really poor!!

Interesting - I know work use CDMA data connections in a number of the vehicles. Wonder what we will move to now and how this will effect the equipment in the vehicles.

If it's just for telemetry then it's business as usual as the 1X network is still operating.

I guess we all know what's getting brought up in the Monday morning meeting now. Also you seem very surprised, is this because you didn't know this or because you know otherwise?

Good riddance to bad handsets.

Now, hopefully the change in avaiable spectrum means I might get some usable 850MHz at home since XT is basically a dead end here. CDMA and before that analog/damps are acceptable.

If speeds are really going to be that fast, it would be nice to see some higher data plans available :)

+1 Android is great if you have plenty of data, suffers if not. Higher data plans at the current prices. And i'm talking data that they will commit to, not data where the carrier offers bonus gigs for limited time. You sign up for a plan and you want to know it will remain for the term of the contract.
