I just checked on the Telecom Wholesale site and my local cabinet (MSY/P) has been upgraded to VDSL! Woot!

However I am unsure what I need to get this at home and there seems to be little information on the Interwebs about the topic.

I do know I need a new splitter - but what is recommended?  My house is fully cat5/cat6, even from the demarcation point, so no worries there.

Then there is a new modem (is it the correct term CPE? I see that around a lot).  Again, recommendations or ones to watch out for.

I am also guessing that as with the ADSL2+ upgrades there is nothing that needs to be done from the ISP (Telecom) and that it will just 'work' once the hardware upgrade has been done?

Hi, as yet Telecom have only soft launched VDSL2, this means its available to their wholesale customers (ISP's) for trailing so that they can get a feel of the product and work out plans to go with it.

I think you will find for the next couple of years all VDSL2 modems will be provided by your ISP. Telecom have been using Alcatel, 2Wire and Thompson modems for tials.

Also, all the VDSL2 filters that are available have been thoroughly tested and checked for compliance by Telepermit, so go for which ever brand you find. The are a direct drop in replacement for the old MM3200B except they have a seperate modem pair (green) so you dont have to double terminate the line input pair.

Thanks cyril, but does that mean if I have a splitter and modem I would get VDSL speeds? Even without specific VDSL plans?

Or do I have wait for my profile at Telecom to be upgraded/changed?

Hi, no you need to be upgraded to VDSL2, currently these are not for public sale only "soft launch". I think you will find they will be launched in the new year and most certainly at a $ premium.

Plus, if you managed to get the gear required then I think you'd find that it would still not work as I remember reading in the MSM that it was highly likely to be sold as a premium product - ie you'd need to pay more to get it.

You won't get vdsl speed unless you are on a vdsl plan .

I expect vdsl to be costly, probably at least a $20 /month premium, probably more if increased caps are included.

Also, I wouldn't bother with vdsl unless they increase caps too. You could blow 20gb in a couple of hours.

I was just reading a document about the Thomson TG789VN, and there is a not saying "Please note: this modem does not autosynch between ADSL and VDSL so please do not plug this modem in until your VDSL service has been provisioned."

Seems I do have to wait, bummer!  I was looking forward to some decent upload speeds!

Just keep an eye on the tech news (like ComputerWorld) as there are articles/updates every few months about VDSL on their site and what's happening with it. That's how I knew it was going to be a premium service, not a straight upgrade.

Expect a launch in early 2011.

With some exceptions every install will require a truck roll for the installation of a VDSL splitter. You will also need to be have your line tested to ensure it's suitable for VDSL. being in a VDSL coverage area (as indiccated on a map) is no guarantee you will be able to receive the service.

I got an email from Telecom Wholesale to advise that soft launch has been completed and to check with your ISP as to when they will be offering VDSL products and services.

I have an internal ADSL filter/splitter thingy as we have a monitored house alarm that was causing problems when I first got broadband years ago.

Would they swap out the ADSL one for the VDSL - and how much does this cost.  I remember the cost of the ADSL one not too high and they just billed me on my telecom account.

I would be very interested in VDSL if the price wasn't too much more than what I currently pay for my Pro plan.

It'll probably be at least $20/month more than what you currently play. (With no extras, etc)

Well that is definately do-able, budget wise.  Just need a guesstimate on the VDSL splitter/filter thingy now.

On the positive side, the Thomson 789vn is a very good gadget for internet and voip, even if it's an upright :-)

Anyone in the know if Telecom is going to be doing VDSL2 soon? My cabinet is now VDSL2 enabled. I live about 50 meters away from it :-) Current attenuation is 5db and 3db for downstream and upstream.
