Hi guys. Wondering if anyone has any advise. at about 2am i left wellington and went to titahi bay to see a friend at a party. I was texting along the way but just before I got there she stopped replying. When I arrived she told me that her phone had JUST been stolen before I got there. It was a $799 XT phone on a contract that she had had for 3 days. She left it on her kitchen counter and it dissapeared right before 2 people left the party. They suspected one dodgy guy called Tyson. Then 2 days later (this morning) I get a text from a random number asking who I am. I ask who he is first and he tells me I text his phone on saturday night and said im leaving. Then i clicked, I texted her phone cause I thought she wasnt replying to me. Little did i know her phone hot stolen. The idiot replyed and said his name was Tyson. So now I can confirm his new humber he has with the phone, and that HE did it. Trouble is that isnt enough evidence for the cops to do anything.

So all he done is take the sim card out and replace with his own. Is there not a way with the new XT network they can block the IMEI or anything like that? And if so on XT will it still work on Vodafone? And will tey block it too??

Or is it just leave it as a loss?? :S

Thanks for any input

File a police report and add the person's name and phone number. Presumably your friend has an invoice with the IMEI number - even the box. If the police doesn't want to investigate, fine - but they have all the information needed to

a) find the person
b) check that the handset has indeed that IMEI
c) verify that the person did not acquire the phone legally.

If they do it, great, if they don't...

Use the police report to ask the operator to block the IMEI. Then go to your content insurance provider and ask for a new phone (if it's covered).

It will work on Vodafone, unless you contact them with a police report and ask to have it blocked.

Your girlfriend needs to ring 123 and report her phone stolen so we can block it from being used on the XT network.

I dropped her to work in the morning and she was going to go to the Telecom shop to try sort it. I cant contact her now as she doesnt have a phone or a replacement. If i PM you her old number and the new number texting from it, can you see if the IMEI match or anything like that???

Hi i jus spoke with her. She says Telecom put a lock on the sim AND the phone. And i told her he text me and she said Telecom said that is impossible as they put a lock on the phone too and you need a code to unlock it EVEN if you put a Voda or 2 degrees sim in it it wont work. Is this true and how does that explain him replying to my text this morning from an 027 number???

Confused :S

They probably locked the IMEI after you got a message.

Also currently there isn't a single lock database so the phone will work on other networks unless you notify each of them. The single database is being worked on at the moment.

I know overseas they use common blacklists for different companies but not here..

Apologies for the confusion. At the moment we can only block a device (IMEI) on our network.

Text the guy and say that you have wavesecure installed on the phone, www.wavesecure.com tell him you know where he is and can track the phone.
Give him the chance to hand it into the police (tell him which station) or you will pass the info onto the cops

Bad idea. If I got a message like this the first thing I would do is take my sim out, remove the battery and chuck the phone.

A friend of mine had the same thing happen and called the person with the phone to say they would pay them for the return of the handset. Once the meet was set up at a local dairy for that afternoon, his friend who is a cop came to watch. Once the phone and money changed hands he arrested the guy and that was that. The cops are really helpful when they know they have a good chance at catching the bad guys.

Yeah, probel is, the guy that nicked it is so set on denying it that I doubt he will give in easy. He is her friends cousin. He sounds like hes about to cry, but its so dam obvious it was him. Sounds like a cleptomaniac of sorts :S

And yeah id probably do the same thing if someone said the were tracing me.
