I was gifted a nice  brand new iphone 4 which was purchased from Apple in LA.

How can I get it going on the XT network. A have a mini sim but somebody told me I would have to jailbreak the phone from the USA codes?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

An iPhone 4 sourced from the states will be locked to AT&T so putting any other third party sim will not work. You will have to "jailbreak" and "unlockit" (ifs its possible on the version of firmware on your iPhone).

Jailbreaking allows you to install third party (non apple store) programs on your iPhone and unlocking allows you to use a third party sim in the iphone (apart from AT&T's if sourced from the states).

In NZ if you buy an iPhone it is already carrier unlocked from the factory so you don't have this problem.

If you want to know 'how" to jailbreak/unlock the iPhone 4 check out redmondpie.com as depending on the version of firmware you have on the iPhone 4 etc it can be different.

Thanks
