My Inlaws are using a XT prepay stick as they did not wish to sign a 2 year contract with Telecom on the closure of the EVDO network. It worked out cheaper to let the contract run out then pay early termination fees.
The question we get differnt answers to is can they keep there existing Xtra email address when they cancel their exixting account and move to prepay? and if so is there a proces to follow?

Thanks in advance.

they would have to pay for the email account if they wish to retain it on its own

Yea there was a price somewhere for someone to hold onto their email account, can't remember what it was. Don't think it was that expensive, Give them a ring, they can tell you.

Even better - get them to migrate to a web based service like GMail so that next time this happens it won't be an issue. Sign them up to hold onto their Xtra address for a few months whilst they let everyone know that their email address has changed.

Thanks for your replies. The issue is thet Telecom customer services said $10.00 a month, and Telecom shop maintains that there wiull be no charge. personally I agree they should moved to Gmail but they seem resistant to change.

The $10 per month will be correct. Tell them that they can keep needlessly shelling $10 per month for life, or move to something that gives them far more freedom and that they won't need to pay for, won't need to back up, and will just work.

Even better, create the account for them anyway and introduce them to it - let them get use to it and see what they say after a month or two. Get family to just use that address so that they're force to at least try it. (I must do that with my parents)

hold on, the OP didn't say his inlaws were leaving Telecom, just switching from EVDO to XT prepaid.

Presumably he can just keep his email address just as he did before as long as he remains a telecom customer?

Also, if the only reason for going prepaid is because they didn't want a 2 year contract, XT offers mobile broadband on open term (i.e. 30 day contract) and always have done. Wouldn't that make more sense if they are going to be regular users and don't want the hassle of topping up regularly?

and if they have fixed broadband with telecom then they should definitely be able to keep the email address for nothing.
