Ok so my brother in laws telecom calling plan is Total home lite>
http://www.telecom.co.nz/content/0,6845,206399-204546,00.html

It comes with 5gb of broadband data.

Then he purchased the Adventure Broadband plan(bottom of page on link above) which gives him 20gb of broadband data.

But his usage meter only shows his data cap to be 20GB.

Shouldn't 20GB plus 5GB be 25GB? Has telecom made a huge mistake here?

No mistake. He's upgraded to The Adventure Plan so has a 20GB cap.

Do you get a small fries and a large fries at McDonalds if you upsize your combo?

But the wording on the telecom site says "Get more Broadband data by upgrading to one of these great plans"

So it doesn't say 'replace' and 'overwrite'. So 5gb then add more on should be 20 + 5.

Ahh no, as the wording states above that you've quoted "upgrade to one of these great plans" so you've upgraded from the 5GB plan to 20gb plan.

"upgrading to one of these great plans", not "adding one of these great plans"

Yes you do get more! It does not say, 'we will add the cap of your new plan to the cap of your existing plan'.

What you may be thinking is, is that your brothers cap was reset. So he could have used 5GB, then changed to the 20GB plan and he would have still had 20GB left, as its a new plan.

i agree with sbiddle and tumnasgt....it is an upgrade..not addition

No, Telecom did not make a huge mistake. Actually not even a small one.

As above... The plan was upgraded. The Adventure plan would have been pro-rated anyway to compensate for the already built in 5GB...

Tom, sbiddle's McDonald's analogy is perfect.

When you order a large combo they don't give you small, medium and large fries do they, or one massive box with all three sizes combined?

Your brother in law had 5GB, now that's been replaced by a 20GB cap, it's as simple as that!

2020 MacBook Air M1 (Space Grey) | 2023 Mac mini M2 | 2021 iPad Pro 11" M1 (Space Grey) | 2021 iPad mini (Space Grey) | iPhone 15 Pro Max (Natural Titanium) | HomePod (Space Grey) | 10x HomePod mini (Space Grey, White, Yellow, Blue, Orange) | 4x Apple TV 4K | Apple Watch Ultra 2

Am I really reading this? And it's not even the 01/04/2011

I am going back to Suzuki and getting them to fix their huge error. When I purchased the GSXR 1000 they forgot to give me the GSXR 600 and the GSXR 750

@NealR have you picked yourself up off the floor yet from laughing?

lol

If he upgraded mid-cycle from a 5Gb plan to a 20Gb, his usage will have been reset to zero, so if he had already used his 5Gb, he does get another 20Gb (so in this case 5+20 does equal 25). If he hadn't used the 5Gb, or upgraded at the start or end of his billing cycle, he just gets the new plan.

It does not say it's a plan though. It just says "5GB Broadband". There isn't even a 5GB broadband plan listed here:

Exactly... He had purchased a plan "Total Home" as shown on the Telecom website it comes with 5GB of broadband... He then chose to upgrade to 20GB... He wont be charged the full amount of the 20GB as he is not purchasing only the broadband connection but also purchased "Total Home" of which includes 5GB of data... He upgraded the data.

He didn't upgrade the data. He added a new broadband plan.
