Has anyone taken a leap into Windows Phone yet?

Or know of Telecom's plans regarding a release of a decent phone to the general public?

Played on a Trophy with vodafone during christmas and now I want.

I am currently using a samsung focus which is running on the XT network. Fantastic OS and device. Love the super-amoled screen.

you can buy couple of XT capable windows phone 7 devices from mobicity.co.nz. samsung focus and the htc mozart.

Gen-I is currently selling the LG Optimuz 7Q to it's business clients. Telecom retail will most likely sell wp7 handsets sometime from early 2011.

Think I'm going to go with the HTC Mozart.

How  is the focus working out? Do you have access to all of the market place features etc?
I seem to recall something about billing to carrier, so without official support may end up being a bit of a dud?

I really wish Telecom would get behind something more than android.

Anyways.

My main concern is about updates and whether they'll come from the carrier or whether Microsoft will bypass the carrier and deliver straight to the customer. I'm interested in a WP7 phone but I think I'll wait till phones start shipping with the update that'll be released early this year.

Windows Update will be delivered directly by Microsoft.

no complaints about focus. have the all the marketplace features including the samsung apps store. Only thing that does not works is MMS. Samsung did release a network profile tool which lets you select your carrier and the phone configures the MMS setting accordingly. Does not picks up the XT network for some reason. Telstra users in Australia say the 'network profile' app works fine for them on the samsung focus and now they can send MMS.

HTC from day 1 wp7 launch, included a network profile app so you can easily select the carrier and the MMS settings should be fixed. There is a way to fix the MMS settings on the samsung and LG phone's but it requires bit of hacking into the diagnosis code which I do not recommend.

So when Microsoft makes it available it'll be something like a download off their website? Is there any word on Telecom ready to launch Windows Phone 7 devices some time this year? I really don't want to jump through hoops - I'd sooner go into a store (yeah, I'm a bit old school).

Windows phone 7 needs the zune software to sync like iphone needs itunes. If the update pushed by microsoft is less than 20MB then phone will download it OTA (over the air). If the update is bigger than 20MB then wp7 devie will let you know that an update is available and connect your phone to your pc/laptop that is running the zune software and the update will download and install via that.

I have had now several apps updates pushed through the marketplace created by different developers and 95% have been less than 20MB so I was able to download and install them OTA.

Microsoft will be pushing a fairly big update sometime in Feburary which will add copy and paste and several performance and bugs will be fixed.

Mobile world conference is in Feburary so expect microsoft to announce more on the update, new carrieres like telecom and new handsets then.
