I went to the telecom phone compatibility check to check my IMEI number

LG P500 Optimus One

Your device supports the following frequencies:

GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz

WCDMA 1900/2100MHz

P500 work in limited XT area.

I am aware that XT mainly operates with 850 Mhz

Does any one know whether P500 can work in Auckland using 2100mhz or something?

MOBILE: Huawei P30
OTHER: Thinkpad E14 + Asus Vivobook + Intel NUC5i3 + A family of Raspberry Pi x 9 + Amazon Echo

Technicvally - Kinda yes, but don't do it. It's going to be a terrible experience with dropped calls, missed / delayed texts and extremely patchy coverage

Total waste of time. 2100MHz coverage is infill designed to cover high use areas.

Telecom are now selling the LG Optimus One P500 for use on the XT network.

The same "Telecom compatible" phone is also available at The Warehouse, and perhaps other places too.

Based on what I read above, I quizzed the staff in a Telecom Mobile store about this - does it really use 850, or does it just get by on 2100, and I was assured that the models they sold were indeed 850/2100, and so fully compatible.

It seems LG make market specific variants with the same model name and number, but different specifications. I have also recently seen posts here on GZ of people successfully using the P500 on XT.

A note of caution though - there will be P500 phones out there that are NOT compatible with XT, so check the specifications and return policy carefully before you buy.

If Telecom is selling it then it will have 850 and 2100 bands..
Telecom's PTC 257 says
"The operating WCDMA bands on Telecom Network are 850 MHz and 2100 MHz. It is
recommended that all devices be able to operate on both bands as this will ensure
maximum available performance. However 850 MHz only devices are acceptable although
there may be performance limitations in some locations or situations. "

I figured it was improbable that they'd try to sell a 900/2100 phone for XT, even though they could genuinely claim that it would work (some times, in some places, to some degree, your mileage may vary, no backs!), but stranger things have happened.

The variant they have has a different radio.

2degrees version - 900/2100
Telecom verison - 850/2100

I reckon so, and expect everything would be fine in this regard with the correct type of P500.

I guess I didn't say in my first post above, but I requested that this thread be unlocked just so I could add the new information that there now were Telecom approved P500s for use on XT, whereas before, anyone looking for an answer to the question posed in the thread title would have found a thread saying the P500 would not work, as I did.
