I've got a Nexus One and a Galaxy Tab, both are 850Mhz WCDMA versions I got to use on the XT network, which I'm doing.

Other than the fact that they won't work outside of the CBD in WCDMA/HSPA mode (2100Mhz) with Vodafone, it looks like it'd almost be worth the sacrifice due to their relatively spectacular deals. $40.85/month for 30 anytime minutes, 300 texts, 3GB of data (!!) and 1000 PXTs.

Now, the closest I can get to 3GB with XT appears to be 500MB which is available as an add-on, the base plan that I can plug this into is still going to cost $68.61/month all up. Admittedly there's a "limited time" offer on this which gives me 1GB of data and 5000 Texts.

Now, the texts I could care less about, I send around 300-ish a month.

Am I missing something or is there a huge imbalance in the data plans between the two networks?

I _could_ get a pure mobile broadband plan, but that still works out significantly more expensive than the Smart1 plan.

Any suggestions?

I agree vodafone's Smart plans are the best thing around for getting a large amount of data on your mobile, nothing Telecom offers comes close.

the 3GB is only a promotion. They can withdraw it at *any time* (maybe with 30 days notice not sure), so if you sign up for a 24month contract (as I believe you must on that plan), and then next month they withdraw the 3GB (which they could do), you are stuck on that plan for the rest of the contract, which might only be something like 250MB.

also note that the XT Smartphone plan promo is doubled to for the life of the contract i.e. it is guaranteed for 24 month.

you also need to be very careful with the non-data aspect of the plans too e.g. your usage of minutes on the vodafone plans. That plan gives you only 30mins, but checkout the price of any minute over that 30 - a whopping 91 cents per minute!

A mere extra 20 minutes in the month will set you back over $18.

same goes for txts.
The plan includes 300, which you say is right for your needs. but any extra txts over the cost you 20c. you cannot add txt2000 to this plan.
So if you send 500 (not beyond the realms of possibility if your average is 300) that is an extra 200 over your included amount which is 20c x 200 = $40 on top of your bill.

XT Double Smartphone extra is only valid for the first year according to the website.

I don't need 3GB anyway so just switched back to XT today, being 3G everywhere is worth it.
