Please bear with me as this may get confusing.

I'm looking at buying an HTC mobile for use on the XT Network. Telecom currently only sell a couple of models and they are not that appealing to me. However, that's not the issue.

Telecom currently sell the HTC Touch 2 on their website, so it obviously meets the requirements of the 3G WCDMA/HSPA 850MHz network. Now, going over to HTC's website and finding the specs for the same phone it states the network requirements as being;

HSDPA/WCDMA:

Europe/Asia: 900/2100 MHz

Up to 2 Mbps up-link and 7.2 Mbps down-link speeds

Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE:

Europe/Asia: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
(Band frequency, HSUPA availability, and data speed are operator dependent.)

According to the above, and to my knowledge, the phone should not work on the XT Network (please correct me if I am wrong).

Now lets take a look at another HTC phone Telecom do not sell, the HTC Legend for example. This phone has the same network requirements of the Touch 2, but many have said it will not work on the XT Network. (Here, again from HTC's website, the network specifications);

Europe:

HSPA/WCDMA: 900/2100 MHz

GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

Asia Pacific:

HSPA/WCDMA: 900/2100 MHz

GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

Can someone please explain why the Touch 2 does work, yet the Legend wouldn't?

There are different builds of the same phone. The ones on the HTC website are the main phone spec, but there are other differences.

Check out mobicity.co.nz, you'll see different versions of the same phone with different specs for different telco markets.

You just need to make sure you buy the one that has the right frequency.

There are some phones, e.g. the LG GW620 that support both and is controlled by software which frequency it uses. I wouldn't rely on that though, unless you've tried it first hand as most phones won't do that.

HTC manufacture most of their handsets for the asian and european markets, that is mostly 900/2100 3g handsets. they also make some specific models for the carriers/networks that support 850 3g.. eg AT&T in USA and Telstra NextG in Australia.

In a nutshell, if there's an HTC handset on AT&T and Telstra NextG, it'll work on XT, with perhaps some firmware adjustments to make the device fully capable. also AT&T handsets are often locked, so their ones may need unlocking.

I have the HTC Desire A8183 (NextG Compatible/XT Compatible).
Works well. I'd recommend it. Otherwise the Desire Z and Desire HD are both nice models too.

I have the same handset :)

Check out www.mobicity.com.au and look at the NextG handsets (Telstra = WCDMA 850, same as XT)

Just be careful. When you say the HTC Touch2 you obviously mean the 850 version of the mobile. The 900 verson of the mobile will in fact not work with our network (it will work on 2100 in major cities but it's very limited).

This is a good example of the market specific products.
If you dig a little you'll find there are also an A8182 and an A8181. They all look identical and are all generically called HTC Desire, but are optimised for different market network configurations.
