I keep seeing the same old retoric coming from the same old Geekzoners. 'Telecom monoply...' this and that.

Lest we forget the facts...
1. Saturn/TCL wanted to launch in Auckland and got stymied because of their 'ugly black cables'
2. Woosh have wireless boradband network oh and they offer phone services
3. Citylink have their own fibre and wireless networks
4. Vodafone have an extensive mobile network which will soon be truely broadband

..And cheers to all the other little battlers out there doing it without the copper.

The truth of the matter is... wait for it... Telecom have a monoply on anything that runs over the copper. Why? Because they own it!

So in the future when reporting on matters pertaining to a 'monoply' please remember to consider what the word actually means:

Exclusive control by one group of the means of producing or selling a commodity or service [From Answers.com]
