It was 2 years ago when we eagerly awaited the launch of Telecom’s XT mobile network offering a pure 3g experience and speeds unseen in NZ.

As info on pricing was released many commented here on geekzone that they were disappointed with the so called ‘one rate’ options which essentially made you pay a very high ‘network access’ fee with a few free minutes but pay extra for texts and data.

On Friday 29th May 2009 early adopters rocked into telecom stores nationwide and signed up to 2 year plans to get onto the network.

It hasn’t all been plain sailing of course XT’s network failures, the launch of 2 degrees and Vodafone’s 3G upgrade have all taken the gloss off telecom’s new network.

If you signed up on day one you’re near enough to 23 months through your 24 month contract and are no doubt considering the options for your mobile future.

Telecom has finally seen the light and ditched the one rate pricing in favour of deals which offer calls, text and data in a bundle but the question is ‘is it enough to keep you with telecom?’

So what are you going to do? Have telecom done enough to keep you? Are you happy with the network? Are you looking at other options with other networks?

I'm not actually with XT anymore, but not by choice - my employer provides a Vodafone account so I'm stuck with that. If I could choose though, I'd be back with XT in a heartbeat.

Luckily I was overseas during the whole debacle at the beginning of XTs life, so I didn't have to go through the frustrations many of you did. My fianc? did though, and she praised Telecom's efforts to make amends. My experience of XT has been nothing but fantastic - stark comparison to my Vodafone performance.

Looking forward to getting back on XT sometime in the near future!

I'm staying, because nobody else has coverage where I live (in a valley). Unfortunately the data speeds are nowhere near as good as they used to be in 2009 though :(

I'm sticking to XT. Although they may not have the cheapest plans or rate and limited device range, the quality of coverage and voice sold me. The quality of voice calling on 2degrees and vodafone isn't in the same league as xt. National 3G coverage is also superior to other carriers in NZ. I still carry 3 numbers around with xt my main phone on account, 2dgrees prepay for international calling and sms, vodafone prepay for just keeping the number as I had it for more than 10 years.

Staying, but waiting for telecom to upgrade our area.

Getting one bar on XT & CDMA = comes & goes during the day. Normally when reception randomly comes, ph goes off constantly for a min or two receiving txts.

Have been told they are going to build a tower. But we arent on the top of the priority list.

Anytime now telecom.

Preferably now with you winning the bid with vodafone...

Staying with XT for my personal phone.

Got a Voda work mobile and to me, where I live and travel, my XT phone leaves my Voda for dead.

+1, though I get great coverage on both VF and XT. Data plan on XT is cheaper for me.

I would have left for 2degrees if they could give data options along the line of what XT has. But they don't seem to be interested in doing this.

I must say data speeds have decreased but they are still pretty good. I really wish that XT had the same level of coverage of CDMA though, there are spots around hamilton that i frequent that have terrible XT coverage (dropping off the network) and CDMA has fine signal.

Have you logged a call with 123 about the spots in Hamilton that frequently drop out.

If Telecom doesn't know about it then how could it get fixed?

I'm staying with XT, despite the temptation of the 2degrees $19 pack. If Telecom released a similar pack, I would be over the moon.

After a nice discussion with a person from XT on the phone last night and the lack of more than a single braincell of some of the store employees Im considering switching to 2 Degrees when mine runs out in a couple of months. Found XT to be fine, been a telecom mobile customer for 18 years, never had any real issues just not terribly impressed with their new plans..

I'm staying with XT - there were some hick ups but apart form that things have been running pretty well since then. Internet speeds are great, the hand set selection although at times behind Vodafone on occasions when it is updated the phones are pretty good (LG C900k Optimus 7Q).

Why I keep with XT? I live in the Hutt Valley and Vodafone's coverage is simply horrible.

Its mainly inside buildings where its an issue, go outside and its fine, yet CDMA doesnt have these issues. My testing is not scientific by any standard due to phones having different antennas, however even very old cdma phones seem to fair better in some places.

Nonetheless, if its recommended i will log these areas with 123 if it will possibly assist.

Hi. I'm glad someone has asked this question. Perhaps I am dumb but I was expecting them to fall over me to make sure I sign again. I've had my phone 2 years and have been hanging out to get a new one. The best They could offer for the $30/month plan for 2 years was $60 towards a new phone. I really did think there would be more incentive or reward
for loyalty - especially for early XT adopters. I've lived over seas for many years including Oz and Asia and there you would get phones thrown at u to stay with the provider. So am I dumb or just naive?
