I've been trying to run down bandwidth issues from my house in Raglan, but had never been able to figure out where the cabinet was.

Perhaps old news to old timers here, but just today i finally found a google map of the telecom cabinets.

Wanted to share just in case anybody else was looking for this.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be absolutely accurate; the physical WHK/AP cabinet (Whakatane) is about 180 metres west of where that map has it, and WHK/A appears to be in someone's front yard. It's probably still helpful (and once WHK/A actually physically goes in then I'll be able to confirm its location; it's the one that I'm scheduled to be connected to) but don't rely on that map for down-to-the-metre accuracy.

Nick, glad I could help. Behodar, thanks for the heads up.

Just going to walk the distance to it to see how far it is (now that I know where to look).  My speeds are rather poor at around 3000kbps (regularly going down to 1500 kbps it seems), but if this is accurate-ish, I'm only about 600 meters away and connected at adsl2+.

Yup you're right, not completely accurate.  It's off by a couple hundred meters for me.

Their data isn't the best. The location they show for our local cabinet is wrong, they are showing the location of the old cabinet which was replaced over a year ago by a whisper cabinet (about 100m down the street).

I had a look on youtube to look at what a 'whisper' cabinet looked like.  That is not what I was looking at when i found the correctly named (and surprisingly small) cabinet.

If my modem claims "DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A"  does that most likely mean I am connected to a whisper cabinet somewhere else?

(if so, wondering then where is it, wondering why my speeds around around 3.5 Mbit)

Thanks

You shouldn't need to look at YouTube for this (which is, I suppose not the best place to find more technical stuff). Just look at sbiddle's blog post about our visit to the Telecom exchanges and cabinets: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/sbiddle/7113.

NZ Telco is a really interesting blog authored by the founder of Araneo wireless, definitely worth adding to the RSS reader imo.

For the cabinet locations he would have had to convert from the Chorus/Telecom NZ Geo style co-ordinates to whatever standard google uses (off the top of my head have forgotten) then google maps itself is not 100% super accurate on where a location actually is... but a nice visual nevertheless even if the data is old (the post is from Feb).

Not quite the same but Wholesale have an address lookup so that you can see when your exchange is and what services you have in your area.

Also has updates for when Wholesale/Chorus plan to have services updated: Site is: http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/tw/public/website/wholesale/technologies/!ut/p/c5/vZHLDoIwFES_hS-4...

His conversion to google coordinates is perfect in our case, he's got the old cabinet location spot on so it must be the Chorus data that is wrong (or being misinterpreted in some other way).

I think you're right; I checked the spreadsheet on Chorus' site and it has the same incorrect location for WHK/AP.
