Since Friday evening I've noticed HTTP is excruciatingly slow on Telecom ADSL - HTTPS and all other traffic is normal speed.

Pings, traceroutes etc look fine.

As I write this post, the page finally finished loading after about 3 minutes.

Everything seems to be happening in little bursts, as if there is major packet loss, but MTR's don't show this.

All other types of traffic seem to be fine, and if I run a speed test I get 14.5Mbit down and 700kbit up.

HTTPS is fast, e.g. my Facebook account is set to HTTPS and pages load fine, but loading say a news article on stuff.co.nz the text of the page loads in about 10 seconds, but the images etc load up over the next 2-3 minutes.

I can't see anything obviously wrong like MTU/MSS issues, and my traffic is not going via the cache as I am excluded from that (and have tested on the Lagado tester to ensure this is the case).

Does any technical people have any ideas or suggestions? I think explaining this to the helpdesk will be difficult.

It's not a single computer problem, have tested on several. If I enable the debugging plugins in Safari I can see the data is loading in bursts about 100ms apart.

Router is a Cisco 877.

Is the issue to all sites, or just a particular site?

You can also download Fiddler. That will break down HTTP (and HTTPS) requests  to let you see if anything is going on. It will show all HTTP/S calls from your browser to the host. I am wondering if the HTTP traffic is being proxied by your ISP and the proxy is a bit poked.

Telecom now have a transparent HTTP proxy. It's possible that it's playing up, causing what you're seeing.

Logging a fault with them would be a good idea to make them aware of the issue.

Often the job you log seems to get picked up by spare level 2 type tech's so you don't have to deal with the level 1 phone answers that you do via the phone helpdesk.

Oh thanks for that link.  I did not realise we could email telecom from their website for issues.

I've been having the same issues as the OP.

Like a lot of people I just do not have time to sit on hold to telecom for ages and have to repeat my self to the various levels of support.

If anyone is interested here is a traceroute to twitter from my machine.  It is all gobbly gook to me.  but might help Telecom staff browsing these forums to collate data to try and solve the problem.

Why one of the hops says "dialup" is because there's an old reverse dns record for that ip address, has no effect on the service.

Weird high latency at the mayoral drive hop in that tracert, but otherwise looks normal.
