The new Yahoo!Xtra Pro Mail web interface that has started rolling out breaks Xtra aliases. Since the year dot, I have had my primary email address (let's call it husband@xtra.co.nz) and an alias that my wife uses (let's call it wife@xtra.co.nz). For years it has allowed us to send emails from either address and the recipient has correctly seen these emails with a display name of either 'Husband' or 'Wife' depending on which alias was used to send it. Now, with the new Pro Mail interface, I can still select between the two email aliases, but both have the display name of 'Husband'. So when my wife sends an email it comes up as Husband but with an address of wife@xtra.co.nz.

Is anyone else seeing this? I have double-checked that the 'Sender Name' fields in Mail Options are correctly filled out, but something somewhere is broken. If I switch back to the old Pro Mail the problem goes away, but I understand that the old platform is being shut down soon and I really don't want to use the Classic Mail UI again. I have fed this back to Telecom but to be honest I have little faith in them being able to fix this since the mail platform is not theirs.

You are quite correct. I too am waiting for some advice on this problem but have little faith in Yahoo and even less in Telecom Xtra resolving the issue.

Are you using alias or it is a sub-account, i.e. husband@xtra.co.nz is primary and wife@xtra.co.nz is a sub account, and is treated as a unique user (and password)?

ISP provided email, it just limits your ability to change ISP freely. Also personally I think the Yahoo email UI the new and old one sucks.

Check out Gmail's ability to pull in mail from other accounts and centralise your mail in one place:

This is really useful to keep receiving email from old accounts while you transition to using a new isp independent address.

You can even go one step further and register a nz domain name and use google apps standard (free) rather that just a standard gmail.

You can also access gmail/google apps mail from any client that supports IMAP or POP, the IMAP support makes it one step ahead of Windows Live Hotmail imo.. otherwise Hotmail can basically do the same thing pull in email from old accounts to one mailbox etc.

I'm well aware of GMail but I'm quite happy using Xtra. I don't want this thread to turn into a debate about which mail platform is best thanks.

You are clearly not happy using xtra or you wouldnt have made this thread about it not working properly.

IMO continuing to flounder with an ISP that doesn't even bother to provide email and farms it out to the lowest of the low for webmail providers is foolish when for US$10 a year you could have your name or something as a .com with loads of aliases and a much better interface and the ability to use imap with it.

An option is to delete the alias, create a free Sub Account for wife@xtra.

If you POP thats no issue, you can use both from one install. If you webmail and wish to login once, you can add the wife@xtra as an Account in Promail, verify it, and manage that the same as the alias. As in login to husband@xtra recieve email from both addresses, send from both.

Maybe the alias From Name issue may be resolved as they finish the platform migration. (Promail runs on two platforms (Classic and Promail beta), this upgrade is an upgrade to the interface and to get onto one platform)

Pity that another good post is being taken over by the Apple sux, I hate Fords brigade.

Its a bit annoying when you see an interesting post where you can help, or you can learn something, or be brought up to speed on a new issue, only to have to filter out the ASIHFB

Then you get ALL THESE EMAILS if you reply.

With respect richms, his thread was posted due to one issue he isnt happy with, not what provider he is not happy with.

We have number portability for land lines and mobiles these days to promote competition and make switching provider easier.

You can't take your @xtra.co.nz with you if you switch provider and email addresses are heavily used these days. It's a real pain to let everyone know you've changed your primary email addresses and go and update every website/service you've used the email address for registration/login on.

Gmail was just an example, I also mentioned hotmail.. they could use any provider they like.

Using your own domain name or an isp independent email is easy, sensible and practical imo.

Thanks for that -- that sounds like a good option but are you quite certain that if i delete the alias I will be able to pick it up again as a new sub account? I'd be concerned that deleting it would delete it forever...

I doubt any half-decent ISP would allow resue of an alias or account by anyone once an account is removed. This would be a serious security issue...

Imagine you can your account, someone registers after and is then able to get password reset emails, etc?

Aliases are not supported by Yahoo, but they were migrated in in 2007 when Xtra moved the email task to Yahoo. You cannot create an alias. If you delete one, you can then go and add a Sub Account with that past alias. When you delete the alias, it will be available, so add the Sub Account straight away.

Mauricio is right, but this issue is due to them having aliases because they had to import those used by Xtra users. Otherwise, no email address can be re-used, Core or Sub Account.

I upgrade to the new platform and I am still recieving my email to my alais, so it still works in a general sense.

Follow up Xtra or Yahoo and hopefully they can fix yours.

His issue was that when he sends email from the alias, that the from name defaults to the core username's name, i.e. Bill, Joe, etc

Sorry I have just read orginal post again and yes I just notice I have the same issue. Not a big one for me but would be nice to get fix as I share the same mail box with the wife.

I will follow up with Xtra myself.
