i liv in havelock i no it's not much of a town but i find that some times in the day and some times in the night i lose coverage
on my phone some times it lasts 30 mints some times less. im just wondering does anyone else have these problems? or know why they happen?. i no it's not my handset i have tryed useing my other telecom handsets and they do that some thing.

Weather etc can affect the reception. Its also possible to get random blackholes in coverage areas. In my bedroom i usually have full reception but there are times when it drops down to one bar or even none. Its just the nature of RF

Are you on 027? Because of the way CDMA works with all calls using the same frequencies it suffers from an issue called cell breathing. This means that the size of a cellsite coverage is dictated by the S/N (signal to noise) ratio which in turn is increased by the number of active calls on a single cell. Because this base noise level is increased it means a phone further away from the cellsite has to to increase it's transmit power to communicate with the site, if your phone can't increase it's transmit power any more it will result in a loss of coverage. Unlike GSM CDMA or AMPS doesn't have a maximum number of channels per cell, it's a mathematical equation which depends on factors such as terrain and background interference.

Basically more callers = less coverage
less callers = more coverage

It's quite a common complaint with CDMA carriers in the USA who have poor network management, if your outages are occuring at peak times then I would suspect it could easily be the cause.

Oh I should have added - EVDO does not breath. It is only related to 1xRTT.

sbiddle that answers my Question very well thanks. and yes i am on 027 realy it's 27 Because 0 is an access code isn't?. Why doesn't GSM do the same thing? i like the GSM technology better it seems much more clear then CDMA what do you think?

I frequently found this when I had the 027 phone here, would always start to go in and out of coverage around 5pm every night. If I could get a call out on it then people always had trouble hearing me

CDMA can be better than GSM, It can also be worse, CDMA does seem to have audio that breaks up a lot and can be quite robotic if the coverage is less that perrfect or the site is busier than usual., (I'm not sure why, packet loss?)

From the sounds of it a GSM phone may suit you, I have the same problem at home as my coverage is extremely poor. and keep one GSM phone "just in case" as my CDMA drops out at peak periods. (between 7-9pm weeknights, expecially on frinday night.)

I can suggest you find someone whom has a hucky old phone lying about and keep that at your house for a week.

i got a GSM phone thanks for your reply. and i have all ways been a ferm vodafone belevr i think all and all telecom is cheper but vodafone is the best service provider in new zealand would you agree with me?

Yes Vodafone is a great service provider. Especially their 3G coverage. Tried using it in a building, hmmm it doesnt get through the walls. Even the VF shop couldnt get a signal. Great service.

Wait.... whats that? Did I just get told off?? Are you telling me I can't say things that aren't 'nice' about Vodafone? Well Joe, you know what? Im sure that they can handle it.

Its true, VF's 3G reception is nothing short of crap. When you are in a building with the antenna right above and can't get reception its not a good thing. Especially when it happens to be Vodafone's shop. I have used an N70 over the last couple of days. I can be standing somewhere with full reception and try to make a call and the reception disappears.

In that same place I get very little reception on Telecom yet can still make a call without any noticeable quality loss. I am yet to have a single good experience with Vodafone's servce so I think I am fairly justified in saying things that arent so 'nice'.

(for those who are wondering I am not the biggest Telecom fan either)
