Hi all

Is it possible to upgrade my Milestone to 2.2 without the "official" update?

If there is, is there a risk I will turn it into useless hunk of black plastic (with a hint of gold trim)?

And is it in fact worth it anyway?

Thanks!

There's a Cyanogenmod port for the Milestone (Which will be running 2.3.3)
Have a read through http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=670

Rooting/unlocking it can brick your phone if you do it wrong, but custom ROMs are usually the only way to get the latest android releases onto most phones. :)

Thanks for that.

I've just been told that the processor is too slow in the Milestone to handle 2.2 anyway - would this be true?

I did wonder if there was an all in 1 mod for it, But to date couldn't find a good answer.

Mate has one on XT, and of course is running out of space for apps etc as you can only install apps to external card? on 2.1

From what I read, Telecom have no intention on releasing any OTA or otherwise official update for it. Here and Israel only places in the world that chose not to. They also advised him it would void all warranty/support (of course).

I also read if you use any of the non standard US builds etc, it is likley to have the wrong modem SW and hard to aquire an 850mhz version.

2.2 or 2.3 should be faster, if anything..
(Especially if you get a ROM that isn't full of crap like the stock ROMS tend to be)

You can only install apps to the microsd card if you're running a custom ROM with apps2sd on 2.1.. You get native install/move apps to SD from 2.2 onwards.

I've recently been playing with custom roms on my milestone.

Cyanogenmod6 (2.2)
Cyanogenmod7 (2.3)
ice and fire (2.3)

Have a google and a read, particularly on XDA forums. Clearly you will lose warranty but imo it's way worth it. I found that the 2.3 roms I tried weren't quite as 'stable' as the 2.2 CM6. I have rolled back to cm6 and it is very good. I haven't found anything yet that doesnt work.

When you go through the process, you will need a different version of the OpenRecovery software that most guides suggest, as you will need to select the right frequencies for XT.

The key reason I did it is for 3G hotspot, which works perfectly.

If you have ay questions, post here or PM me.

To be completely honest I have no idea where to start - this is far too propeller-head for me, I'm afraid.

Thank you for the info though - greatly appreciated. I'll just stick with the default, I think.

You know what, I thought the same but it's really pretty straight forward.

Download the required files, save them to your memory card.

Boot into recovery mode by holding a certain mix of keys and select a few options in order.

It's surprisingly easy.

Okay, I will give it a shot then.

Question please – you said that I would need a different version of OpenRecovery of XT – can you please advise which one?

And to summarise.

I need to download this file: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Latest_Version#Google_Apps

And follow these instructions?
Installation:
- use OpenRecovery Apply Update menu to install the zip copied to /sdcard/OpenRecovery/updates
- data wipe/factory reset is highly recommended when you are upgrading from another rom/firmware or from 0.01/0.02 to the current version

I can’t find any instructions that say anything about holding keys or selecting options (unless OpenRecovery steps you through it?)

Here is a guide for updating to 2.3, most of it is the same:
http://androidforums.com/milestone-all-things-root/312359-how-update-milestone-android-2-3-3-instruc...

The english in it is a bit funny, I think it may have been put through a translator.

Where that guide says openrecovery, you need to download a different version called androidiani:
http://code.google.com/p/androidiani-openrecovery/ (downloads on the left, about halfway down)

Here is another guide:
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/install-android-2-3-gingerbread-cyanogenmod-7-on-motorola-milest.../

Just read through all of those, if you get stuck on anything, google it.

Please understand though, that doing this will void your warranty. This worked perfectly for me, but you are doing it at your own risk.

So I need to root the phone first? (bloody strange term that)

OK, sweat beading my brow now. Everything went peachy - have now rebooted, and have the "Bootloader 90.78 Err: A5,69,4E, 00,23" message.

Googling it is pretty useless - am I in trouble?
