Okay, so I bought the Huawei X1 phone, which is a great little phone.
But, it wasn't long before I started to tinker with it, and in the process I lost the stock Telecom rom and ended up having to flash with an Aussie version.
The problem I'm having though, is that nearly all roms I've found so far will not register properly on the network, and as far as I found out, it's because these all came from 900mhz providers and not the 850mhz like XT.

So heres what I would like somone to do f they are keen enough...

Use SuperOneClick to root their phone.
Install RootToolBox.
Flash with recovery-RA-u8160-v2.3 (you may need a file manager like ES file manager)
Power off then on holding both power button and volume up until recovery menu comes up.
Perform a nand backup of boot, system, and data and then...

Please please please upload the files somewhere for me!

If its anything like the x5, you can hold down a combination of buttons while starting to put it into the bootloader. When i plugged this in, i could fully access the X5's entire file system. I used this to copy some files off an x5 i had access to and give them to a mate who had managed to accidentally wipe all the data from this NAND.

You'd be able to fix this 3g issue simply by flashing the 850mhz baseband files. Unsure where these are located, but its a very easy fix once you find them and you don't have to change ROMs.

For anyone offering to do this, keep in mind offering a NAND backup is the entire contents of your phone. if you are going to do this, factory reset first.

Thanks for the offers of help.
The button combos are vol-up + power, vol up and down + power (this one does reflash).

As for the baseband files, I can't find them anywhere, and using the recovery flash I've suggested, yes you can access the whole file system, but buggered if I know how to change the baseband...

I think for the backup, reflash, someone only needs to provide a system plus boot image.

With the OZ Rom can you access 900MHZ HSDPA or is it a hardware restriction?

It would be great if we could enable the additional bands in software.

Well, yes, but the problem is the XT network runs on 850mhz.
By flashing the OZ rom, I've pretty much flashed it to 900mhz.

What I really need is the complete NZ telecom rom.

What I'd like is a hybrid rom with 850 and 900 MHZ HSDPA

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

I noticed earlier that the phone model is actually U8180-7 not just U8180..
So does that mean a hardware change for NZ?

My understanding is that generally the frequencies are based on the hardware, not the software/rom. If I have a phone that runs on 850 & 2100 mHz, and put on a rom that uses 900 & 2100mHz, only the 2100mHz will work; the phone won't suddenly run on 900mHz.

Well the Telecom model is an U8180-7 so the "7" probably defines which frequency ranges it supports. Real shame that this isn't defined in software as surely it would simplify manufacturing.

You could possibly provide some further guide or steps to doing a ROM dump?
Cant get the 2nd method that you linked for some reason.
It is rooted, but RootToolBox will not launch, get Force close.
and do you have a link for the recovery img you mention in your first post?
