I have here a Galaxy S i9000T from telecom as part of a telecom business plan.

It has a random issue where the device appears to turn off, and is totally unresponsive until you remove the battery and power it on again. Battery level doesn't appear to matter.
Usually i would just have them contact telecom support but this is the type of thing that will happen either once every two weeks or twice in and day etc. Appears to be very random, and so the service centre probably wouldn't reproduce the issue.
What would the best course of action be?

Firmware is telecoms 2.3 from kies.

I assume that its caused by the battery slot being slightly bigger than the battery itself, so there's a chance for the battery to move around inside cavity thus the "sudden-death". In this case you can pick up a small piece of cardboard and put it in with the battery, giving the battery some extra support. Hope this would solve your problem.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Really? I would have thought if it lost contact, then it would probably regain it at some point, and so wouldn't explain the fact that the device cannot be turned on/used/whatever until the battery is removed, and then put back in. You can press the power button as many times as you like, but it doesn't do anything. Additionally plugging it in for charging does nothing as well.

I've never had mine shut down on me,

Maybe a factory reset and if that doesn't work you might need to get it repaired under warranty

This has happened to me twice, the 2nd time yesterday.  I agree nothing resolves it but removing the battery for a short while then putting it back in, restarts as if nothing happened.  My phone and situation is the same as your, my battery is not loose.

I'm probably going to install a custom ROM on this which is pretty pathetic for a brand new phone to fix what i'm guessing is probably a software issue.
The person who owns it is sick of the phone and has told me if anyone wanted to buy it they would happily sell it off.

I'm guessing even on business plans (through their telecom business manager?) telecom won't change the phone.

Take it back for repair. If it's intermittent, make sure they list that on the repair notes.

Then if it continues to happen at least then you have some recourse that the fault wasn't fixed.

Yes as BrentR says please take it into a Telecom store to be fixed. At least give us the chance to try to fix it. If we don't know about it we can't fix it.

If you do have problems let me know.

I know Telegistics keeps your $55 bond if there is no fault found. I have a feeling this will happen, but i'll get them to take it in anyway.

Keep a bit of a diary over the next few days when it happens. Or take it in (don't remove the battery) when it next happens.

Telegistics don't keep your $55 bond unless the phone isn't under warranty, ie damaged, reflashed, too old etc. even if no fault found
