*We recently changed our ISP to xtra. We found out afterwards they do not support “imap”, only “pop”, for mail.

*We need imap so that we can synchronize our 2 mac computers. Its not possible with pop. We use mac "mail".

*Telecom does not support imap. However we have been told that people have managed to set it up. We have tried different settings, but so far it has not worked.

We got imap working in both computers, receiving & sending mail. but not synchronizing.

Can anyone help?

Kind Wishes

incoming server = imap.mail.yahoo.com

I am pretty sure it just happened automatically as I don't recall ever typing in that server address.

Actually, reading your post again I think this is more of a Mac "Mail" issue. I easily sync webmail + iphone with imap mail settings but note Mail will sync intermittently. Even now just testing it I get an error saying port timed out.

You can always just not even the xtra address and have all account notifications go to an other email address eg: gmail.

Gmail has great imap support.

thank you Riahon & Ragnor very much for your replies.
I tried imap.mail.yahoo.com and it still did not work. Would not sync between computers.

Maybe gmail is the answer. We were told by the telecom sales rep that this would work. Did not find out until after we had changed and emailed everyone, changed all our subscriptions etc... that it doesn't!

Thats life.

Thanks again

When there are so many other options out there (which can cost you as little as $10 per year) I'm still amazed so many people stick with ISP email addresses when your own domain is a far superior option. An email address for life that you'll never have to change when moving ISP's.

thanx sbiddle.
Yes we are not very computer literate obviously! Can we set up gmail on our computer so that it does what an "xtra" or orcon email does. In other words so we dont have to log in to the web. The emails just automatically get downloaded and sent from the computer? Or can you recommend something else? It has to be reliable and able to sync between computers.

Thanx again

gmail will work fine in mac mail, as well as any other mail client (and on smartphones). You can also set it to collect your xtra emails.

They have very good instructions for setting it up with IMAP in various email clients.

Thank you so much. It seems the smartest is to go with gmail.

We want to use 2 computers to access the gmail account at the same time. We found this below on the gmail website. Any experience or comments with this.

"Too many simultaneous connections

According to the Gmail Terms of Use, each user account is intended for single use. This means that if you have multiple users frequently accessing the same account or more than one IMAP1 client accessing Gmail at the same time, you may reach a connection threshold and receive the error message, 'Too many simultaneous connections.'

Gmail currently has a limit of 10 simultaneous IMAP connections per account.

Please note that your mail client may actually open multiple connections in the background. This means it's possible to reach a connection threshold simply by using only two mail clients to access the same account at the same time.

If you often use multiple mail clients or mobile devices with the same Gmail account, we recommend closing and/or signing out of any mail clients you're not actively using."

Does this mean access to gmail from only one "user" (computer) at a time.

thanks

Valli
