question about phone wires

Well i have been trying to find the phone wires that come from the street but i cant seem to find them , does anyone know where will the phone box usally be at?

reason i ask is i just moved to new zealand over from canada and we got our phone lines right at the side of the house in a small grey box which we call the telephone interface box , isnt it suppose to be the same thing in new zealand or is it just my rental?
i am in auckland by the way

Hi, in houses built or for whatever reason had repair work done by Telecom since the mid 80s onward will have an ETP or small external white box. If the leadin is overhead then it will typically be up on an eave facing the street, if underground a wall facing or adjacent the street down near ground level, typically 300-700mm above ground level.

Houses that are older, it will just appear at the first or master socket, if overhead the cabling will enter the roof space and then drop down a wall to the first socket, if underground it will simply appear out of the ground under the house, sometimes in a conduit other times not and simply find its way to the first socket.

If its in this latter category the best way is to take the top off every phone socket and have a look, the leadin will typicaly be a black gel filled cable, whereas all the internal cabling will be white or grey.

The demarcation point could be a box on the outside of the house or behind one of the jackpoints (usually the original 1st in). What sort or connection do you have , buried cable or aerial drop lead?

Well i just moved here from Canada and the way we have it over there is that every house has its own phone box right at the side of the home , its usally a grey box and all the telephone wiring will be there , isnt it the same thing in new zealand ?

Hi, as mentioned in my post, in older houses there is no such box, in newer homes or ones that have had major repairs by Telecom there will be. What age is the house?
