Will there be any way to use CDMA devices in NZ following the shut-down of the Telecom CDMA network in 2012?

Looking for information on how someone might continue to test / use CDMA phones in an on-going capacity for development environments?

Any help or pointing me in the right direction would help.

Very unlikely unless you go to China or the US..

If you have the likes of a Samsung W531 world fone with a GSM SIM slot you may get some life out of it as long as you don't want to use it on Vodafone..

The network is going, going... No way for those handsets to be used for test/development.

A friend uses the Samsung W531 in GSM mode on 2 degrees and roams happily on the Vfone 900/1800 GSM network.

I think you won't have any spectrum available to create a demo network. And you will be better off moving this kind of development to China or US.

Get a serial port equipped CDMA modem, deploy it with a power supply to a friendly in a CDMA equipped country, and use the internet to access it?

That's an interesting idea. Will investigate.

I've been contacted privately by someone who might have access to CDMA base station test equip, will follow that up too.

I would be very careful with using any 3rd party CDMA equipment in NZ, especially after the network is closed. The frequency spectrum needed for a CDMA cellular connection may be re-used by other networks, and you would be creating harmful interference.

You should approach TNZ about the use of any left-over CDMA equipment. There may be situations (e.g. using a RF screened room) where interference concerns can be managed.

So does mine on 2D but put a Voda SIM into it. "Emergency Only"

Plus you will need a lot of power and floor space to hold it too. I've seen the model CDMA network that is in the Wellington central exchange. It would be at least 20-30 square meters of gear which would of course need 3 phase. And the faraday cage to go with it which would be at least 6 square meters.

Or you could go hard and see if OpenBTS and a USRP could be modified to play CDMA rather than GSM. But the entire CDMA architecture is completely different from GSM so would effectively require building from the ground up.
