My mother-in-laws old Telecom supplied 2Wire router wireless side has died and when the router is repowered it goes back to Telecom Default.

I see on the Telecom website that they are suppling the Telecom TG582n
Wireless Modem (Technicolor TG582n.)

Anyone used one of these on a Telecom line. Just plug it in and turn it on and wallah your away like her old one?? (preset default Telecom username and password..) Something I don't have to go onsite and setup for her..

I suspect that it is set up with the default username / password.
The instructions in the quick start guide indicate that it will connect once it's plugged in & powered up (no changes required by the user).

Current Phone:
- Android: Samsung SM-G900F Galaxy S5 (XT)
- Win Phone 8: Samsung ATIV S (XT)

Current Tablet:

- Acer Iconia 7" Android Tablet

Just confirmed with a colleague - it is set to the defaults (user@xtrabb.co.nz, etc), so plug & play is a go.

Current Phone:

You could buy her any router and configure it then send it. It just needs VPI/VCI 0/100 and user@xtrabb.co.nz and any password (abc123 always works for me) on PPPoA. You could also then pre-configure the WiFi so that you can tell her what the password is so she can connect to it.

If the Telecom on is cheap then go for that though.

The last time I tried that a couple of months ago I sent a Dynalink. Worked fine in Auckland but the ADSL would not sync at her place..

I just installed one today - 12 hours & counting :-) but working fine, DSL hasnt dropped yet which is already a record compared to my old Dlink :-\
And yes it was plug'n'play, even the wireless comes preconfigured with an SSID & key, I was running 2 PCs and my NAS within 5 mins of opening the box.
Just be careful with the admin user & pwd, it comes as user Administrator & no password, so this was one of the first things I changed.
Its obviously a "consumer" device, you really have to explore to find actual settings to change if you need to, but other than changing the admin user & password (and wireless SSID & key to something a little more memorable) its pretty easy.

It does not matter what you use for Telecom broadband any user name and password will work.
Telecom use the phone line number.

The wireless on those Techicolor routers is very flaky, and there was a security hole in the wireless part if you use the default SSID and pass key, so might pay to change.

I would get a TP-link router, much better and probably cheaper.

I dont mean the DSL/Telecom user/pwd, I meant the modem admin userid & password.
As a matter of principle I change anything I can from the out-of-the-box defaults, but not because I saw any specific security hole, all I've done is substitute one string in a dialog for another one, there was nothing wrong with the security settings.
My main problem with the supplied SSID and key were that both were something like MB7C7B8BB5 which I confess I cant remember easily so its changed to a name & passphrase I can remember, thats all.
Its not flakey yet, time will tell of course but as I say its pretty good value so far, and freed up my old one for a hand-me-down.

Nothing is ever free, it cost you a 12 month contract.

Every body should change the default SSID and pass key, and Telecom should be promoting that, I think only the older ones suffered from the security issue.

As for the wireless, I setup a customer with a wireless printer and it drops out all the time and won't print.
I think the main problem is a compatibly issue with Apple wireless stuff, there is a firmware upgrade that fixes it, but can't get it unless Telecom decide to make it available which I believe so far they have not and Techincolor don't deal with end users.

It would appear the other issue with this router is the fact you can't change the default IP address, not through
the GUI at least.
I have had this issue with the TG858v8 as well.

Not so the TG582n.
Its very "consumer", you have to really explore to find stuff, but you can do almost everything you want from the GUI, eg
Basic configure pageThe TCP/IP Configuration section on this Configure page allows you to change the following parameters of the selected IP address:

Technicolor Gateway Address

etc

I will allow that configuring the USB for a printer required telnetting in but thats also something thats not officially supported eg not even described as a capability in Telecom's user guide.

I would say most people will want to use the DHCP server.

Which brings me to that GUI they use, worst I have ever seen.

I just think people should stay away from anything where the manufacturer does not support the end user.

Siemens is another that comes to mind provided by a well known ISP, had lots of bugs in the firmware but no way to update as the ISP did not bother.
