I know its wap charges have been bought up before but here my story

[RANT]
My mate is on vodaphones 1GB mobile data plan and this includes wap useage...
Great I think ill go on telecoms 1GB as im developing a interent radio java player for my phone
Rep at telecom store says ALL data included, great I think so I sign up

Check my bill online in the weekend and $670 chage for wap..what I say, they say call back monday - friday
Called today spoke to a friendly advanced data support techy who said dont worry keep using the service as normal, at the end of the month youll get credited back the value of 1GB data or if lesser however much i use.

Me:So if i use all 1GB then @5c kb ill have $50,000 charges at the end of the month?
Tech: Yes but their will also be a credit to offset it

Seemed a little strange to me but ok...

10 mins later calls back
Tech: Ahh youve been using WAP
Me: Ahh yes and?
Tech: WAPS not included
....
...

Long story short they have decided to refund the wap charges and offered to take me off the 1GB plan...WELL DONE :)

Anyway their website mentions nothing excluding wap and the tech gave me wrong ifo. I mean come on if the name of the plan is mobile data plan then you could reaonably expect wap was included unless otherwise stated. I think this needs clearing up on the website

[Moderator (MF): moved to Telecom New Zealand]

And why do they not have a wap data plan in that case?

The cost of WAP on Telecom was posted by Tony on a blog entry a few months ago, and it appears things will change - someday. Check http://www.geekzone.co.nz/tonyhughes/902

In the meantime, yes this is a delicated subject, but we are keeping an eye on it.

Opps sorry I had meant to post into the TNZ forum.

The only reason that I can see for charging wap at such high prices is to stop people from downloading their own ringtons/screensavers off the net and instead paying $$$$ to go through the telecom store. Just as the A920 has bluetooth file transfer disabled but thats another (related) story.

Time to stop monopolising this service and make it clearer on the website especailly now with 3G phones which are designed for wap and wap content delivery of streaming media.

Perhaps i could get some hosting space thats within the free telecom domain
Either that or  use a differnt wap portal? can this be done? is it againsnt TNZ T&C?

Filterer, there are several reason for the garden and charging structure which have been discussed here (including me having no in put in to the outcomes)... however you seem to have 2 separate issues here... first is very bad advise from both the store person and the CSR you spoke to, second is to do with the charging structure...

The first I cannot address (though you should certainly let the store person know about your experience, and contact the CSR's manager as well).

The second issue (from a technical perspective) could possibly be addressed. You mention a Internet Java Radio Station. Are you building a MIDlet that accesses data? If so, PM me with some details and I'll see what we can do for you. If you are trying to stream via the browser, I would recommend you look at other options.
