Just released by Telecom, and valid as of today (but not on the Telecom website yet), are the new Mobile Broadband plans.
A pretty good effort, if you look closely at the 1GB plan, you can have 2GB EVDO data for $59.95+gst.

This makes for a very viable option for savvy low-users to ditch landline and ADSL, and use mobile instead. (But watch out for those automatic updates!!).
Broadband Data PlanMonthly MB's TermMonthly Access PriceOverage Charges Telecom Mobile Broadband Card
included in plan(exclusive of GST)(exclusive of GST)

*Note - An additional charge of $0.50 per Mb used over your Mobile Broadband plan allowance.  However:
200 MB Plus and 200 MB Open customers pay no more that $10.00 (on top of their normal monthly fee) for an aditional 200 MB of Data over and above their alowance.  Any further data used over this additional allowance wil be charged at the flat rate of $0.50 per MB.
1 GB Plus and 1 GB Open customers pay no more that $10.00 (on top of their normal monthly fee) for an aditional 1 GB of Data over and above their alowance.  Any further data used over this additional allowance wil be charged at the flat rate of $0.50 per MB.
Note: All pricing for the monthly access, hardware and overage is excluding GST.

No offend to anyone, but this is kinda expected as Vodafone has announced their new data plan, and naturally TNZ will match it. Look at what TNZ did when vodafone announce 1GB for $49 few months ago.

Also worth noting, perhaps Vodafone and TNZ are together in this "mobile data plan rat race"?

A question that I have in mind though is... will the current 1GB users get to enjoy the new data plan? Or they are stucked on the 1GB for $49 (Old) [regardless whether is on TNZ or VFNZ]

I'm guessing users already on a contract for the 1 GB plan on Telecom will have break fees as they were contracted to stay on the plan as it was then with all its features.... although hopefully these will be reduced in an effort to bridge the gap.

I heard from our Account Manager that current 1Gb customers will be able to take advantage of the new $10 overage...

But that was just from an Account Manager, they often don;t know what they are talking about, no offence if there are any on here

And your point is? Really, it would be great for consumers, but companies can't just go bringing down prices. There's a ceiling and there's a floor, limited by associated costs of providing the services with good infrastructure, support and other tidbits.

If TNZ decided to offer this at $39.95, VFNZ could move to $34.95, then TNZ would move to $29.95 and VFNZ could match there, but probably not lower because of costs.

So, who can't guarantee that $49.95 isn't actually the floor for this service under the current conditions?

Fair enough, I'd love to see cheaper services, but some stuff just can't work like this, otherwise companies won't do what they are supposed to do, i.e. make a profit so that reinvestment resources can be obtained, shareholders dividends distributed, etc.

Oh, bummer. This is not an economy class.

Back on topic.

They didn't have to undercut Vodafone, but they could have structured their charging differently rather than launching what appears to be a carbon copy of Vodafone's current offering. Their response to You Choose was unique and innovative, but their response to 3G Broadband is not.

The problem for Telecom is that they have to remain competitive with Vodafone, but they would also want to try to avoid cannabalising their fixed line revenue. It's not an easy position to be in.

The $10 "capper" is wonderful, It makes it now especially suitable as a replacement for fixed-line broadband.

The contracts are not, though I applaud them for at least still retaining the open term option.

($45 homeline + $40 1GB xtra plan  = $85)
The all inclusive price of $60 for up to 2GB data is very attractive indeed.

I still think they just did another "me too" copy of Vodafone, Groan...

Not heard that one yet, It will be a new Billing code, but am pretty sure if you ask to change to it  will be within the Guidelines as it is not a Tier Drop

I still think that people will be exposed to the risk of exceeding their traffic limits. If you go over the 1Gb cap, your attitude will be that you might as well get as close to 2Gb as possible to get maximum value for money, but you could then easily go over 2Gb unintentionally. The excess traffic charges which kick in after the 2Gb cap could be a nice little earner for both Telecom and Vodafone.

Yes. You could be paying $49 for 5 times the data allowance. And then an extra $10 for 100% more. But I am not sure this plan is available for everyone, or only for datacard users.

IIRC, the initial $49/1GB plan wasn't available for Harrier/Apache, but this changed later. Is this applicable?

Sorry to tell you all this, but this is incorrect, there are various fees to transfer from exsiting plans to these new ones, including the old 1GB promo to the new 1GB plan.

They are as follows:

To new 1GB Plus promo:

$199+GST for customer currently on MB200, 400 and 500 plans
$99+GST for customers currently on MB Flexi, 12, 20, 45, 50, 70, 100
$49+ GST for customers currently on existing 1GB plan

To 200MB Plus promo:
$199+GST for customer currently on MB200, 400 and 500 plans
$99+GST for customers currently on MB Flexi, 12, 20, 45, 50, 70, 100
$49+ GST for customers currently on existing 1GB plan

Hope this helps.

Yes you are correct, they first retailed at $499, then down to $399 to match vodafone's VMC open term pricing. As of now, with these new plans the RRP is $529 ex GST. I guess this is an encouragement for customers to sign up to a fixed term plan.
