I live in Dairy Flat, Auckland and have been waiting many years to be able to get Broadband. The reason I was always turned down was because the local Cabinet needed upgrading. Imagine my excitement early last year when I read it was to be upgraded by September 2011. Sure enough on Telecom wholesale maps it indicates it has been upgraded for ADSL2+ and shows my house in a red zone 600 meters from the roadside cabinet.
I have made several requests to Telecom and Telstra Clear for BB since the upgrade, but they inform me that they cannot provide it to me, and cannot give me a reason why not, or whether it is permanent or just a temporary problem. Why is it so hard to get an answer? Is it a ruse to keep me on the expensive, inadequate and under-performing XT-mobile T-Stick forever?

Sounds odd.

I would try another couple of ISP's to see if you can get a better answer. Specifically try Xnet or Maxnet who are known to have pretty knowledgeable locals on the help desk.

It potentially has something to do with the RBI cabinet, which has overlapping coverage, and is due to completion in June 2012.

Any ISP can do a prequalification check on an address, so there is no harm in ringing around.

It does from the Chorus availability map look a bit weird since it looks like you should be on RDB/20 Cabinet. But as Steve rightly said you are in a RBI zone into RDB/P so that may be something to do with it.

I had to go and ask someone in Chorus about this question and after speaking with one of the planners it seems that the project to commission that Cabinet (RDB/20) was not done for a whole raft of different reasons. On the upside the RBI Cabinet RDB/P is due to be commissioned in June this year. Leaving RDB/20 on the map was an oversight by the Chorus GIS guys and I have spoken with them and they are looking to correct the map to not show RDB/20 anymore.

Apologies for the miss-information on this. It seems that the GIS data accidentally made its way into the production maps.

If I overlay the RDB/P Cabinet due to be commissioned by the end of June 2012 it shows you should be able to get service at that point. With the grey outlined area showing the coverage area of the RDB/P cabinet.

This is more of a Chorus question rather than a Telecom one now that Chorus is a completely separate company. But I was glad I could find out the definitive answer for you. Albeit not the answer you were looking for. But at least by the middle of the year you should be good to go.

Thank you everyone for your input and advice and especially to Plambrechtsen for taking the trouble to sort out the issue. Now I know that there is light at the end of the tunnel :-)
