Any chance of an upgrade from 2.3.3?

I've asked the team. Will let you know if I get any response back from them.

So the update is that our team are in talks with Samsung about a new release. No confirmed details or dates as yet.

Fingers crossed for an ICS release in Feb once Samsung are ready.

Well lets hope we are not asking this very same question in april/may when we are still all on 2.3.3

I asked over twitter a couple of weeks ago, last i heard after a few messages was "will check" asked a couple more times and did not get a reply

Battery drain on 2.3.3 is a bloody pain (its fixed in 2.3.5), but will live with it if we get ICS in feb/early march.

Samsung have said sometime in 2Q for the SGS2 ICS firmware, there are developer versions of the ICS firmware floating around now and they're _reasonably_ stable. Who knows when/if the local telco's will release their own version of it though.

There's little benefit to versions of Gingerbread newer than v2.3.3 at any rate, it mostly applies to functionality not present in the SGS2 or in NZ - here's the main updates other than the usual bugfixes as they apply to the SGS2:

v2.3.4
Introduced support for voice or video chat using Google Talk. (Can be installed separately - don't think root access needed to do so)

v2.3.5
Improved Gmail application (Can be installed separately)
Shadow animations for list scrolling
Camera software enhancements
Improved battery efficiency (Fix for the AndroidOS drain bug - probably the only useful improvement)

v2.3.6
Released on 2 September 2011, this version fixed a voice search bug.

v2.3.7
Android 2.3.7 introduced Google Wallet support for the Nexus S 4G. (Useless to the SGS2)

Nothing hugely useful, ICS would be the one to wait for, but I wouldn't expect a local update of it before mid-year.

I beleive that there is a DarkyROM ICS avaialable.
http://www.darkyrom.com/community/index.php?threads/sgs2-ics-4-0-3-fixerom-lp2-cwm.6687/

Darky's only build from the official samsung ROMS, so hence no DarkyROM for the SGS I9000 (grumble, but AOSP to the rescue!)

I'd disagree about the value of going from 2.3.3 to 2.3.n, Before I moved to ICS on the I9000 I'd upgraded from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6 (Darkys 10.4.2) and got a fairly decent speed increase.

There are several versions of ICS firmware's available, as well as beta versions of CyanogenMod 9 which is ICS based. Obviously, none of these are legitimate upgrades and Kies won't find them, from Telecoms perspective they might void your warranty if you were to flash them if you're worried about such things.

FWIW - Don't touch the current releases of ICS. It still has some fairly serious issues, but it's getting there.

There's much more benefit to be had from using a decent replacement kernel such as Siyah and overclocking it while you're at it, but again, you may be voiding your warranty.

I would say from telecoms perspective they *will* void the warranty :) so far the ICS build I am running on the I9000 is perfectly stable and has great battery life.

Sounds like the i9000 build is better than the i9100 one then - I had shall we say, "mixed" results :)

So far the only issues I've had are certain apps currently don't work on ICS (Like Viber, and parts of tweetdeck)

Tweetdeck has basically been abandoned, look on the market for Tweakdeck, Paul O'Brian from MoDaCo has modified it to work properly with ICS and also fixed some connectivity issues with it. Other than that it's the same program.
