Hi all,

I have my ADSL2+ connection with Orcon at the moment and am considering moving to Telecom. I know the current connection I have is via Telecom wholesale (my phone line is connected to a roadside cabinent, then to the exchange).

One thing that makes me think twice is that, if I decided to move, what is the chance of me being put onto a port waiting list (I don't want that to happen)?

FYI, my home belongs to the Henderson exchange area (via a roadside cabinent).

If you are on Orcon via Telecom wholesale, then there is no chance of you becoming a port waiter.

even if you were on LLU the chances of you being a port waiter is fairly small - not many exchanges are that full.

Moving from one ISP providing your service over Chorus lines/equipment to another doing the same is known as a "churn" and you won't lose your port as long as you contact the new provider to take over the connection before you've cancelled with the old provider.

Check the terms of what plan you are on with Orcon, I think they require 30 days notice of cancellation. ie: You may need to give 30 days notice of your intention to cancel otherwise they will charge you a final extra month.

Thank you all for your help. I contacted Orcon today and gave them the 30-day notice. Hopefully I wound not regret.

as long as you connect with your new broadband provider BEFORE you cut off your current one you will be fine.

if you do it the other way round ... even the FBI cannot guarantee you a connection
