According to the Telecom CSR, I am on ADSL2. When I look at connection settings in my Thomson TG585 V5.85...it is saying my connection is :

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 832 / 7.200

But when I do the speed test at http://speedtest.telecom.co.nz/

I am getting the following result...

Unfortunately I do not know how to get the Thomson to do a SNR and line noise test (?). Anyone care to give me instruction on where it is in the Thomson to do one? Thought I had seen it in there a few months back...but i'll be buggered if I can find it now.

I can't see it being the wiring in the house...house is only 6 yrs old and line filter is on the one phone we use at the house (at a different jack).

All I can say, i've seen this kind of stuff off and on over the last 17 yrs of using high speed ....it feels like the speed is being capped at 3.25MB someplace along the line (and my feeling has never been wrong). It has always been ...oh the tech did this here or the guy at the pole switched this...or forgot to do this.

It's no biggy really, pretty happy to have a half decent speed (but we always want more)...just wondering if my feeling might be right this time.

I do plan to call Telecom tomorrow and check in about it. Just wondering what other may think.

Hi, its odd that even though your modem is syncing at 7.2Mb/s you still only get 3.5Mb/s on the speedtest, try the standard www.speedtest.net and try auckland servers in particular the xnet one.

You say the house is only 6yrs old and a line filter on the one phone we use in the house, but that wont get around line stub reflection issues, only a master/central filter can fix that.

Have you put your address into the chorus SAT to see if you are on an exchange or cabinet and try understand what your options are.

Worth calling up the Broadband support line on 0800 225 598 and they will tell you what you "should" be getting at your address and if that compares to what you're really getting. They will tell you how far you are from the exchange and what the line attenuation db is. The attenuation is the main thing to look for and post in combination with your line speed. I get:

Maximum Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:   965 / 16.020
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:   1.017 / 14.789
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]:   16,5 / 27,0

Which means I am about 2 km or so from the exchange.

As Cyril has said a Master filter will sort any dodgy wiring you have in your house if it's installed properly.

I have finally had some time to look a little more into this and finally discovered where to find the SNR details etc.

How do my numbers look?

Maximum Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 884 / 7.296

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/MB]: 0,00 / 34,32
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 11,5 / 19,5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 16,0 / 32,0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 12,0 / 12,5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote):TMMB / BCLA

My download speed isn't even breaking 2MBs today (checking today on a few test sites). Perhaps I hit my cap...but I am on the - if I go over they charge me $2/gig. So I can't see it being that, unless they still reduce my speed. Sheeshhh

Hi, for 32dB (approx 2.5km of cable) the sync speed is not far far from the mark, purhaps a little low and the noise margin is fine.

However to still only get 2-3Mb/s of throughput is not right, you arent on a Conklin are you or some remote DSLAM, what did the chorus SAT say. Does the modem report error rates, if so what are they.

Hi, based on that I suspect that your on a remote DSLAM that probably has limited backhaul, hence 7Mb/s sync but 2-4Mb/s throughput, probably not a lot can be done there.

Maybe you could look at a local WISP, I see uber group cover out your way

Wish the modem wouldn't show the 7.2 sitting there, it is kinda of annoying to see it. Knowing you can't have it.

Wireless is an option, although an expensive one.

Humm it seems a little strange to me.

I turned on the VDSL2 & RBI areas in SAT for Dargaville and it did seems that you were probably running off the DRL/P Cabinet rather than the Exchange. As per what Chorus information says in their maps it does seem to be a fibre fed cabinet so it shouldn't be limited to 2mb. Unfortunately your area doesn't seem to come under the new RBI area.

If you could pm me your details with name, physical address, phone number & account number or send me an e-mail using my first.lastname @ telecom.co.nz then I can look into it further.

I've checked internally and DRL/P is fibre fed, so that should not be a limiting factor.

Dargaville Exchange is fibre fed too... As per http://www.chorus.co.nz/network-build-updateor more specifically the XLS in the shape zip file here:Exchange and cabinet boundary shape files - Jan 2008 to Dec 2011 (ZIP, 2.2MB)
Which has lots of useful information from Chorus about Exchanges vs FTTN Cabinets vs BAU Cabinets and should support VDSL2 and all that goodness. The "BAU Cabinets" are the non Fibre fed cabinets and could be backhaul constrained from what I understand.

So unless there is some remote cabinet in-between that chorus haven't documented it's all a little weird to me... But what would I know :)

But no good Google Maps KMZ files further out than this year, and the low resolution PDF's linked there doesn't bode to well for your address.

Looks like something may be happening in your area as of 2014, but I can't guarantee that will actually catch your address as your address is further up the road from where the cabinet is going in :(

, I don't even know what a Conklin is...but I am starting to not like it. Although it is giving me what I have now...so I can't be too upset about it.

Sheesshh how close do you have to be to these cabinets? I am only 3.1 km down the road to where that blue 2014 dot is.

I am little confused though....

Couldn't this Conklin thing be upgraded. Cause I am almost at the far end of the road...yet my SNR etc are within the possibility of higher speeds working (if I understand things correctly and this is without the blue dot down the road even installed yet).

Hi a Conklin is a small mini DSLAM that as normally deployed by Chorus has one or two E1's as an uplink. Therefore even though its 3km away so your syncing at 7Mb/s the E1's (2Mb/s each) are limiting the uplink.

Hi, from Peters comments above it would seem maybe in 2014. Many non densely populated rural areas will be offered RBI mobile services from Vodafone as an option, or as in your area WISPs also, both of these are available today.
