From Stuff this morning

Tim Miles, the former boss of Vodafone New Zealand, is being tipped to take over from Theresa Gattung as head of Telecom next year.

This would have a major effect on Telecom a Vodafone top exec running Telecom.

Interesting nevertheless....

I agree with the major effect comment... would it be a morale blow?

It would be at least a slap it the face... "oh you arent doing well enough, by the way we are bringing it the competitor to run the place..."

I disagree. He's not "The Competitor". He's a professional manager. His loyalty is to the current employer. I've worked with Tim Miles (and Russell Stanners) at Unisys New Zealand before. But I will stop here.

I personally think it would be a great move for Telecom as a person of Tims experance and insight would be of great value to Telecom and would really start to push some new ideas and thinking into the company.

This would leap frog Telecoms current trench thinking and propel Telecom into a whole new space where it needs to go as competation to its local calls and broadband space heats up.

Not only that, but he's worked for Vodafone UK. First it's their largest operation. Second he learned on site about the regulations and moves needed to bring some new services to a unbundled market, i.e. the UK, with BT and heavy competition from T-Mobile, Virgin Mobile, and retailers like Carphone Warehouse.

Much more experience than anyone else in this country I'd say.

As long as we don't see a repeat of what happened with Telstra... they bring in a ex GSM guy and all of a sudden they are ditching CDMA...

I've heard nothing but good things about Tim Miles... but since this was in a stuff article, I wont believe it till I see it on GZ front page

I have to agree with Mauricio here - Miles would be an ideal candidate. Also, if John Goulter categorically denies something, it tends to happen sooner or later. :)

Anybody know is this comment from Stuff is correct? I thought Vodafone surpassed Telecom when Maher was the big cheese?

"Under Mr Miles' tenure, Vodafone New Zealand took over from Telecom as the dominant cellphone company. That success was one reason Mr Miles was shoulder-tapped to run the flagship British operation."

Tim's a nice guy... I think he'd be sweet as... don't see how it would be a morale blow or anything like that... he's got a good track record in the industry

Yeah, if anything, it'd boost morale, wouldn't it?

Not that I know anything of this guy but I would say it would be more demoralising for Vodafone if he was appointed. One of their stars working for the competition - no doubt Tim would have the inside running on who he may want to headhunt across with him. Interesting times indeed.

Miles started in Jan 2002.

Vodafone's customers surpassed Telecom sometime in late 2002 or early 2003:

30/9/02: Telecom 1,248k; Vodafone 1,116k (47% market share)

31/03/03: Telecom 1,235k; Vodafone 1,289k (51% market share)

The September figures came from the DominionPost, the March figures from press releases from the respective operators.
