Over the past week my normally very reliable and fast broadband with Telecom has been very temperamental.

Basically, loading up a website (NZ or overseas), it would take a good 4-5 seconds for the page to 'hear back from the website' (sorry not sure of the technical term) before it starts loading the contents of the page. When it loads, it is fast. It's the waiting beforehand.

This also has meant that YouTube videos can stop loading at anytime, and restart, and stop again.

I am on Wi-Fi, and have reset the modem on numerous times.

I am based on the North Shore of Auckland. Anyone know what the issue could be?

OK Telecom was very helpful this morning. Turns out that just changing the WPA to WEP fixed the slow speed.

Ahh, I think WEP has been discredited as secure, you really should use WPA

probably worth having a go at chanigng the channel your wifi is using. It's possible that somebody is using the same channel nearby and it is interfering with yours.

change it by at 5 (i.e. if it is 6 now, then change it to 11) to minimise interference

Thanks guys. Changed the security and it fixed everything. Strange that the slowdown came from nowhere.

WTF at Telecom CSR's recommending using WEP!

The thing is, that fixed the issue. Very confusing stuff.

Update: I am beginning to think the Thomson wireless modem is about to die any moment. Very dodgy connectivity performance. Hence I have started this thread asking for recommendations here.

Changing the WIFI type fixing the speed issue sounds co-incidental to me.

Next time you run into the same issue plug into the router via network cable and see if you can replicate the problem.

Probably if it's a Thomson modem/router is just needed a reboot.

Yep, connected it with a network cable and it worked flawlessly. So I am thinking it is the wireless that's dying. Your thoughts?

Or just wireless being wireless. Remember you dont have an exclusive license to use that band so you have to compete with the neighbours for it.
