I have a 021 number ported to Telecom XT. Why is it so hard to receive SMS from overseas companies (not spoofing sender numbers)?

For example I am trying to activate EchoEcho and GroupMe, but the SMS codes never arrive. The first time I activated EchoEcho on another handset they actually sent me the code via email, and said they had problems sending codes to ported numbers in New Zealand.

Why is it so hard?

It could be something to do with the logic in their systems, e.g. if number = 6421, carrier = vodafone, sending message to vodafone or something similar. Though it appears that this is not always the case, if ever.

Either that, or there is a database somewhere with this information, in this is not updated frequently.

In any case, since number portability is government regulated, there should've been provisions in place for messages to be forwarded to the appropriate mobile operator.

Think differently, the messages don't go nowhere. They end up somewhere. Carriers will (or at the very least should) have the capability to see this kind of stuff.

Didn't Salty do a big write up in the 2 degrees forum with some likely reasons?

Not sure it includes porting though.

I think it's time to change my number then. Unfortunately I do not trust mobile operators would put any effort into finding and fixing this kind of stuff (and I am not talking Telecom only).

Are we sure it's ported numbers that are the problem? I just tried registering for GroupMe on both non-ported Voda and Telecom. Telecom message received instantly, Vodafone still waiting after 10 mins.

Seems like Vodafone's international incoming messages are a bit broken.

AHA! I just typed in the full number including the zero, so Groupme prompted "64-021xxxxxx" and it came in fine.

Whattsapp worked for me on my Vodafone ported number on the XT network. Got the SMS straight away.
