Hi i am thinking of getting Motorola Defy Plus as my Sony Ericsson C510a is double screening. Just wondering whether it will work on XT, and if not what phone would your recommend in that price range $200-350. I could get Motorola Defy but that seems silly if v2 is out.

Doesnt telecom sell the defy+? If you get it from telecom, it'll work on XT...

If you get it from most other places, it probably wont.. (Needs to do 850/2100mhz 3G)

Yea they don't sell  it, but they sell the first one (Motorola Defy)
http://www.coolmobile.net.nz/mobile/motorola/458-motorola-defy.html
This website says it supports 850/2100, but i don't want to spend $400.
Any suggestions for other phones for XT in this price range?

Because 2degrees sell it I could go in and ask to try my XT sim in it, although i don't want to if it has no chance of working.

No, that site says there are three models (900/2100 MHz, 850/2100 MHz, 850/1900 MHz). I seriously think they just copied and paste the specs from the site - seeing the Vodafone and 2degrees logo there I think it's the 900/2100 MHz model only.

what is the actual difference between defy and defy +?
I bought a defy at the beginning of the year from Telecom, at that time it cost 319, right now I think it cost between 279-299.
I think what matter is that it is water proof and scratch proof, I would not worry about the change in features

Defy + has 1GB processor (25% faster apparently), compared will 800mhz in Defy.
WOW 319 is cheap, seeing as:
http://store.telecom.co.nz/mobile/prepaid/motorola-defy $399 from telecom

and http://www.thewarehouse.co.nz/red/catalog/product/Telecom-XT-Motorola-Defy-Mobile-Phone;pgid=_WBuK9lQILw000g7YXKYPZTu0000oqfRhziL;sid=xwDeWO08TVLcWKJdakbBUvyQqGNjOMuIE_Y=?SKU=1534507&ref=pricespy (cheapest i can find).

Do you think i should just buy from warehouse before they all go or is there another smartphone in similar price range that is better? (not so worried about ruggedness)

319 is during xmas sales at dick smith
299 is during new year sale at the warehouse
so unless you can wait till Easter sale, 339 is pretty much the best deal you can find right now

to me, water proof and scratch proof are the most important features, my little cousin destroyed my old Sony Ericsson by accidentally dropping it into the sea, but defy survived all his tortures without a scratch :p

Do you think warehouse will keep selling it? seems to me like they are getting rid of stock (not that i know how it works. I will need it soon as i am having to use my C510a with two screens right now (not as cool as it sounds). What sort of discount are we talking for easter, $290 or something?

no guarantees, things go on sale during Easter break every year, but no I dont know about the price range, the normal discounted price range is somewhere around 349 for defy

I felt that warehous is just doing another seasonal sale right now, last year during a July mobile clearance, they sold nokia n8 for 375, but now n8 is back on the shelves at 479 or somewhere close.

Motorola Defy is not water proof as many people have that assumption. It is just ater resistant. Being water proof and resistant are two different things and to get the difference just google it

Generally the model of phones Telecom sell and the ones you can get outside of Telecom have the 850/2100 frequency. Some other factors that might not enable the phone to work on Telecoms network are sometime the country from which the phone is bought as Telecom might import its phone from Australia where as other providers ay import from some other country.

Visit gsmarena.com

HSDPA 900 / 2100
HSDPA 850 / 2100 or HSDPA 850 / 1900
thats what it says on gsmarena for the defy+

sometimes it is mentioned like this example below

HSDPA 900 / 2100
HSDPA 850 / 1900 - North America
If you try ur xt sim in a phone sold by another provider and if you are in the 2100 zone it will pick up but if the phone only runs on 900/2100 then as soon as you step out of 2100 zone the sim will look for 850 but the phone will puick up 900 hence the sim wont work o will give limited reception.

My advise would be if you are an xt customer remain with Telecom as someone mentioned that Telecom will also be getting the Defy+.

This statement from XDA summarizes it best:
At first the Defy was presented as a low /med end phone. With 800 MHz CPU, no GPU, 2 Points hardware limited screen. It is well known nowadays that the Defy actually has a PowerVR 530 GPU, TI OMAP 3630 CPU and a screen supporting 10 Point multitouch.

The Defy+ is basically a rebranded Defy, with Gingerbread, 1700mah Battery (instead of 1540mah) and its default CPU speed is 1GHz. It has the same internals as the original: Same CPU/GPU, Memory, Screen and so on.
Defy+ comes always with a Bayer camera module, and so far there are no Defy+ variations.

So bigger battery, updated software, overclocked CPU, updated camera (which is in later original defy anyway).

IMO the best move in terms of value for money would be buying an original defy and loading the latest Cyanogenmod on it. But that's just me.
