Hi

I decided to trial my Motorola Defy MD525 Android 2.2 Smartphone on Skinny particularly to access the lower cost data offerings. My smartphone is a NZ sourced TNZ Android unit set up for XT (Quad band), so I assumed that all would be ok for use on Skinny. It configured and worked fine for Voice and text once you ensure it is sert for 3G or Automatic.

However after manually setting it up with the Skinny APN for mobile data on the device I thought all would work fine, but not so! I called Skinny customer service who were friendly, responsive and sought to see if there was a fix for this. Skinny called me back and we ran my IMEII into there portal - this came up as unsupported (so I should have done this before setting up the SIM).

The Defy works fine on 2degrees and of course XT native on TNZ mobile. I asked Skinny to keep me posted if they can locate a fix, so back to 2Degrees.

Looks like a Defy Moto Droid OS problem to me?? A bit like the Iphone 4S on Skinny that has beenb patched for use on this MVNO network. A bit of a pity really methinks as it is an XT friendly device, perhaps Moto can release a patch for Skinny!

Wondering if anyone has come across this issue and or found a fix?

Nah not just your issue dude, me and my partner are having the same issues on iOS 5.1 cannot seem to fix it.

Have you updated the APN? You can download a config file from our website (http://www.skinny.co.nz/2484_EN-Settings-iPhones.htm?highlight=iphone), or by going to unlockit.co.nz on your phone (using wifi) and using their custom APN option, selecting that you are in NZ and that Skinny are the carrier, to create an APN file for Skinny.

The website is currently misleading on this suggesting that iOS 5.1 will fix it without downloading the configuration file - I'm getting it updated.

Also Skinny thansk for response - yes I did the research and manually set the Defy's APN after visting the unlockit site (prior to my GZ Forum post)....

Used Data APN: wapaccess.co.nz

This did not fix it.

As I say poss a Moto Blur IOS Issue for the Droid version. Can I suggest your technical folks contact Motorola.

Does data work with your SIM in another handset? It might not be handset APN setting related

John - Yes the Defy works fine on both XT and on 2 Degrees over their Edge and 3G networks...so not the device.

Hi John,

Ran the Skinny SIM on my Nokia 6120C handset and set up the APN - it Runs just fine for mobile data across 3G on the Nokia. So as I thought must be the software version of my Defy - it is not Skinny MVNO friendly? A n Older Defy with same Blur droid 2.2.2 version runs ok for Skinny apparently (Has older TNZ build though)!

FYI- According to Motorola User forum a similiar issue occurred (Defy + would no hold the APN) in Europe (Germany beyond) when a new software/ Blurr Droid load was rolled out, it stppped existing Mob data working on Deft+ users . Motorola not responding but a fix on Telenor network was providing a new generation USIM that had the APNs loaded.

Hi - For the info of anyone having this issue, I am pleased to report I have solved this data access issue now and have 3G HSPA data working on my Motorola Defy now via Skinny. Details for anyone interestecd are:

I trialled some SIMS (thanks Paul from Skinny for your support here) - using a different Skinny SIM that preloaded the Skinny APN I had the same issue as my original SIM, i.e No 3G data access. So after trialling a few more things I found that by resetting the Defy to the original Telecom XT APN settings for internet and WAP and then adding the Skinny APN manually the data networking started working.

Note: this fix differs from the Unlockit.co.nz Android instructions for Skinny with the Defy load of Android (Blur). I.e. removing all existing APNs before adding in the Skinny APN seems to cause the issue. ie. after inserting the Skinny SIM - I had to access the mobile network with just the Skinny APN loaded. So I had to do a manual APNs Reset in the device to factory settings so the TNZ XT APN setings are restored - then add the Skinny APN settings in manually (available from Skinny or Unlockit.co.nz site). FYI: The APN "Reset to Default" setting is accessed via the lower left hand soft key on the device once you are in the APN Names settings area of the setup/configs.

My assumption here is the Defy Droid Blur version seems to need the XT setting from the Telecom load to drive the data access. This of course applies to Telecom sourced Defy's. I note that the Defy Andoid APN set up does not allow the user to specify MMS Protocol type to: WAP 2.0 . as there is no tab for this (Perhaps this is the root cause here?)

Anyways Both SIMs now access the Skinny data network (via XT) with no issue.

Trust this helps anyone else having same probs...
