I'm guessing it's because the original source is external.

I guess I could have made that "Articles". Regardless, this is no reason for being rude against authors.

I can't seem to plus 1 any more. Also, the layout of the reply box has changed. Is this me or GZ?

Look at the bottom of the page and let me know what is in the last line after the IP address - is it a Y or a N?

The bottom of the page is cut off on my Chrome (Slimjet) browser. This is also new. On Opera (not logged in) I see a N.

Sorry, my bad. I just discovered that my javascript switch was off. I did this yesterday on an annoying site I was trying to look at and forgot to turn it back on. All okay again, also the layout.

This may have been taken in the wrong way but i think the question itself has merit. The most recent articles I have read from Bill have been opinion pieces and therefore I wouldn't class them as news so could possibly be classed as blog material. Perhaps the section should be changed to articles or perhaps articles that are not "news" could be listed under a separate section?

I personally don't think the OP was trying to be rude, maybe just could have worded it better.

There's an Articles section and I can change the feed to that.

I have removed the rude bits from the OP.

I agree, many of Bill pieces are opinion and not news. There's too much bias for them to be anything but opinion.  I think the vast majority of his items best fit in the blog section.

I cannot see a problem, be it Blog or news it will be on the front page. It comes down to owners choice.

I've got to say that I applaud anyone who puts their opinion out there, people are often too quick to 'bash' such people online.

While I often find myself disagreeing with Bill's opinion, it does make me think and consider a different point of view.

I remember doing some directorship training a few years ago, the thing that stuck with me was the following.

'If there are 6 people in the room all with the same opinion then 5 of them are not required'

Good lively debate and differing opinions have created great things over the years.

Edit for spelling - typing on the phone

Saw this thread and thought I should comment too. Read the Akamai piece and was quite underwhelmed.

http://billbennett.co.nz/2016/10/03/akamai-justice-nz-broadband-speeds/

Firstly there were no references to stated facts, just a generic reference to truenet which compares local broadband and doesnt offer analysis (as far as I can see) similar to Akamai.

This is then followed by a statement which something like: of course its wrong because Akamai doesnt do video.... and then a bunch of other minor reasons (like ping time) for why the NZ number is wrong.

Which leads to my main reason for why the article underwhelms, it seems surprising it is missing what I think is the main reason NZ falls down in these measures, which is the significant number of rural and as yet non-upgraded services in the country (yes I realise the report is for mobile, but rurality is an issue with them too and I am in a hurry

Source: https://www.sparknz.co.nz/content/dam/telecomcms/sparknz/content/news/NZIER-Mobile-Industry-in-NZ.pdf

Also in sourcing the link to the story, I appear to not be the only one concerned about the quality of the article.

Jon

Nitrotech: I think the point of some are trying to make is the articles are showing up on Geekzone as news items when in fact they are opinion pieces.

I don't think most on here have a problem with anyone expressing an opinion.

It's an interesting point but what is news in 2016? - if you look at nz herald or stuff there is a lot of opinion that is on the front page.

it's an interesting quandary for the GZ community.

Regardless, news or article it will appear in the same column on the frontpage.
