FWIW mattwnz I don't think you should just 'suck it up' as suggested by some, even though I would agree with them that from my point of view also it is relatively low level abuse, the point is you don't have to accept it. I don't want that person in the Geekzone community, cowards who go posting personal insults via PM don't belong here.

I agree. If they had instead used the F word in their insult, then it maybe on a different level. But any level of unsolicated abuse via a PM is a cowardly action. Personally it made me feel a little sick and creeped out receiving it just out of the blue from a stranger, when I hadn't done anything to deserve it. I don't think we need users like that here. Icertainly wouldn't do anything like that, as it shows a lack of respect for people.

I did google their username, and although it maybe a different person, it appears that they have posted messages on the subject on news websites too, but it doesn't appear they have posted anything on geekzone before, so it doesn't appear they are contributing anything positive anyway.

I can't do anything until you provide me with a message number.

This is interesting stuff.

The digital harms legislation is going to come into play on this stuff.

Plonker, TWAT, dick, nut, idiot.... all words that many long time posters would just laugh off, but the reality is that we're heading into an age where you just can't be offensive like this and just expect the reader to just move on.

I always try to think about this stuff in terms of a pub. If I just walked up to a random person in a pub and called them a twat for something I heard them say then I could expect a punch on the nose.

We seem to think we have different rights in the net space.

Dean Pemberton wrote some really good stuff a while back on the Internet NZ list talking about how we have to think of the Internet just being a normal part of life and not this different reality that requires it's own rules and laws.

Good point.

I have to admit my knee jerk reaction was the "laugh it off". From discussing since the days of BBSes I have come to expect a much harsher tone. But there is no reason to allow it, it does nothing for discussions and probably scare away a lot of people that are not used to that type of online lingo.

One of the good things about Geekzone is that people are civil (mostly) and that people are willing to help each other out and its a vibrant community. Thats quite a feat if you ask me.

Agreed. There is very little personal abuse going on here, compared to some messageboards that I've been a member of.

I think the big difference here though, Jarle, is that this person has done this through a PM, making it a very personal statement, rather than posting publicly as a general flame (which is against the FUG anyway) where most people would, quite rightly, laugh it off or ignore it.

mattwnz: Is there a way to report PM abuse? Just had an abusive message, and the person doesn't look like they have posted any messages in the forums. Can't find method to report in the control panel.

Who cares, just ignore it.
