None of mine were getting marked as SPAM by gmail - but I do have a processing rule that labels incoming emails from Geekzone, so that was probably enough to stop it anyway

I think defaulting email forum notification to 'off' would make things a lot simpler. That way people who do not want notifications will not get them and those who do can still enable them.

The question was why were they classed as spam, not if they should be on or off.

Sure, but there would probably be a number of fewer people marking the messages as spam if they were defaulted to off.
