KiwiNZ: The last (big) forum I was Admin for we did away with page views as the hit on performance was such it did not justify keeping for very little benefit, we did away with it.

Cool story, neither assumption applies here

It doesn't ?

For users that wish to contribute useful and insightful information to the community, it provides another tool to gauge interest in a particular topic to assist in deciding whether to expand upon it etc. (e.g. Whether it's worth going back and solving an old unanswered post that keeps racking up views etc). For users that just wander the forum adding useless characters to random threads, not so much.

Performance, as stated, can be managed with proper design.

Replies to a thread are already shown, this gives a very good indication of interest in the thread more so than views, number of views is superfluous to that, therefore the DB searches and resulting server loads are not worth it. The overall user experience would be diminished for next to no gain.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I am not trying to be a kill joy with this, but the Forum I was admin of, now it did have circa 2 million members so that does have a baring on this. We had two things running that we tracked down to causing terrible page loads and timeouts. These were a 'who's online list' and 'view counts'. when we checked logs it showed these were indicative for causing our issues. We stopped them both then loaded them back separately. The who's online caused issues but the page view DB hits were significant. When removed the loading and timeout issues were eliminated.

We were using Vbulletin.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
