If you check the box to remain logged in you can close your browser and next time you come back to Geekzone you will automatically logged in (even after you turn off your computer). Obviously only to be used in a personal computer, not in a public machine.

The reason I decided to put the catpcha in was to make sure there would be no brute force attempts to guess peoples password. Remember some people might be using easy to guess passwords and robots could just be going around trying those.

I understand you must have had a good reason for doing this, but I really hate these things and clearly I am not alone. Also, I always clear my cookies when I shut down. It just adds another layer of hassle I would rather not have.

I don't like either but either this or have bots trying to guess passwords. I haven2seen much activity in this way but being proactive here.

We could get away with passwords altogether if we started sending a one time password for each login. Nothing to remember except your email address...

Is there a good reason to clear cookies? If people feel the need to stop tracking then Ghostery is a good add-on for Chrome and Firefox while keeping other cookies in place.

I followed some advise given a long time ago to set Firefox to clear browsing history each time I close it.
I believed it was an extra security measure which until now has not caused any problem.
OK it is my choice, I will just have to live with it.

Clearing cookies *is not* a security measure. It may be a privacy matter but it's not related to security. Cookies are text files. They don't do anything.

Plus there are so many other ways to identify a user that clearing the browser cookies alone is pretty much futile.

Cookies are a legitimate privacy concern. I guess the price of this privacy on geekzone is having to do the capture.

Mind you the catchable debate has nothing to do with cookies.

As I said install Ghostery and have it remove tracking scripts while keeping login and other stuff.

Also if worries about privacy then the captcha on Geekzone prevents robots trying brute force attacks to find passwords.

Cookies or no cookies. Captcha or no Captcha. If worried about one then should be worried about the other.

That is one esoteric work around.
I'm not sure if I'll try it, because I'm not a fan of having lots of 3rd party extensions, trying to limit it to just one or two of the most necessary.

It would be good if the 'robot detection' was less invasive, cant it just analyse the timing between key-presses or something?

I think the captcha is pretty good. None of those hard to read letters and most of the times is just one click away.

Also gives us a good analytics of use..

To illustrate the problem, here are two charts from Google Recaptcha on Geekzone:



Only 30% of login attempts are by confirmed human life forms. Around 70% either didn't click or wee straight bots.



Geekzone compared to world index - at least we are better than the average.

Some of those fails will be me. One of the reasons I hate captcha is I usually somehow manage to get it wrong the first couple of tries. For me the meals are a lot less frustrating than the letters but I still usually miss one. Colour me old.
