Personally I have a self policed policy on here... There's one member who if they participate in a thread, it's poisoned for me and I can no longer post in that thread... I'll PM individuals if I'm in the middle of helping them to continue helping.

Unfortunately it's the best option available without having a really solid ignore system on here...

Cheers - N

Imho a big part of it came from simple misunderstanding of the verified status.

In any case this kind of disturbance is actually pretty rare and there were a series of factors related to a long standing technical and business issue which led to this one.

But you know it could just be one of those things that happens and the community learns from the experience and moves on probably with a more healthier and balanced response if events approach that level of heat in a discussion.

Thats right. Its not the issue, its how the OP handled the answers he was wanting but not getting. His responses came down to implying that John was being fed bogus info and he knew that but passed it on anyway. WTF? The assumptions, and adjective laden of how he was being treated. Then an apology followed by another adjective laden rant. We know what its like to be involved in a "active" discussion, but when its about you trying to help someone, its personal and debilitating. Then you read how your company and everything about it sucks big time. Motivation, desire to help just gets cut off at the knees

I wasn't part of the discussion but I went back and read through the thread and I agree with the above. When someone is going out of their way to help people on their own time, they deserve to be treated with respect and gratitude. JohnR can't be held accountable for all of Vodafone, on which I'm sure his influence is only limited. I always found him to be extremely helpful and I often found his posts informative and illuminating even when I was not directly affected by the issues. At the same time, I do have some understanding of how frustrating an issue like this can get for those affected. When you are repeatedly victimised by a big monolithic organisation and confronted by an impenetrable blank wall when you try to communicate your dissatisfaction, it is not surprising that you get frustrated and want to lash out. Unfortunately, in this case, the wrong target got hit.

The key is, don't look for a target

how about also banning the users that thought it was ok to break the FUG's themselves to abuse him?

I didn't get to see the rest of the thread because I don't have time to sit on GZ all day sadly, so I'm not sure if it degenerated further but I saw one person call him an arse, and I said he was coming across as a self centered twat. I acknowledged at the time that it was pushing what was acceptable within the FUG, but I was trying very hard to not direct abuse at him, but opine on how I felt he was coming across. I could possibly have been more diplomatic about it, but I'm a fairly blunt person who calls a spade a spade.

As to any consequences for me, if there are any I'll happily accept them, and I stand by what I said. I started this thread because I think there needs to be consequences for the way he acted, because if the way he posted was acceptable within the FUG guidelines it blinking well shouldn't be IMHO.

The one who makes up these rules and enforces them apparently thinks that what was said on all sides, however unacceptable, did not warrant sanctions. That should be the end of the matter.

I certainly had strong feelings about that post when I saw it. However, I was not involved in the original discussion and after I chilled down a bit realised it was 142 something pages.

I think it was an unusual situation that got out of hand.

If it was one on one, then it would have been noticed very quickly or simply ignored or locked with no further responses on that topic.

Instead it occurred in an already angsty discussion.

He isn't helping his cause though by saying he was being chased by a "thinly disguised internet lynch mob".

Personally I won't be paying any heed to anything he says again, whether it's related to his cable connection or not.

I didn't say I was chased, I stated that the thread that was started, purportedly to talk about saying sorry and how we engage in the community, was basically just a lynch mob. I was tagged and mentioned multiple times in the opening post, most of the replies were directed at me and a significant portion of them were personal attacks and little else. The OP of this very thread was among those happy to post insults, though here he justifies that by suggesting he was just commenting on my actions, not me personally, a weak argument which could equally be applied to my conversation with John, though I never actually insulted John. At least the OP of the "sorry" thread had the decency to tag me so I could respond.

The reaction of this "community" to someone upsetting one of their favoured members seems to be to start multiple bashing threads for anyone who want to put a boot in, no matter how little they know of the actual story. Could my tone have been nicer with John? Of course, I don't deny that. But I didn't attack him personally, I didn't sling insults, I didn't start threads to bash him and I didn't track him across threads to have a go at him.

The level of blind hypocrisy here is stunning.

Let's not restart this please. If there is a suggestion on how to amend the FUG or not then ok, but otherwise it will be unpleasant again and no one is here for that.

So it's ok to run these threads, so long at the person named in the opening post doesn't respond?

I have a right to reply and I have. By all means leave it at that.

Discussions get heated and people get emotional. I am embroiled in that at the moment. I do not think the FUG needs to be amended. It covers all the necessary points.

The is no need to change the FUG. Everything was dealt accordingly.
