I subscribe but chose to keep ads turned on.
I wouldn't want to miss an opportunity to go shopping.
You are a sick puppy.
Thank you, I like to think so.
Delete cookies?! Are you insane?!
So now there is a pop-up at every click asking to turn ad-blocker off.
I was actually considering turning ad-blocker off. But now with this obtuse in-your-faceness, it's staying on - and I'm just going to visit this site less. Lose lose.

not for a forum that doesnt even take you to the latest unread post in a topic.
Clicking the blue box with the green arrow on it should take you to the last unread post.
Now that we've cleared that one up it's time for you to pay your money so you don't see ads.
Unfortunately there's more to it than that one example
So don't do it then.
illicit: I currently use an ad blocker because the visual assault is almost painful - quite happy to pay $25/yr but not for a forum that doesnt even take you to the latest unread post in a topic.
my 2c
Your 2c aren't worth much then, because the "Last unread post" feature is something that we have for... what is that, ten years?

Which is being discussed here - work in progress. Basically some people install ad blockers and don't even realise how this affects publishers. So I want to remind people to whitelist Geekzone. We're using a service for this and have been putting requests - for example to allow us to determine how many times the notice is shown to visitors. I think something like once a day is enough. So they're working on it.
Now think about it for a moment: you already block ads so we don't make any revenue from your visits. You say that because we remind you that whitelisting is an option you are going to visit less. Well that will be $0 loss out of $0 revenue. See my point?
You don't want ads and don't want a reminder? $25/year pays a subscription. The speed is much better because your browser don't even get the scripts for the ads.
Now, over the years I've seen a lot of people doing it... "Oh, I'd pay to support the site!" and when you point out a $25/year option is available, comes the rebutal "Oh but [I don't use that much] [I don't like some people here] [I dislike the forum software] [I just think $25 is too expensive] [I don't like Paypal] [I don't like direct deposit] [I didn't really mean I'd pay]."
Yes, I've heard it all. There is even the case of someone who asked to have his account removed because he thought $25 was expensive, Geekzone wasn't worth it, he didn't like the ads and I was demanding money. That coming from someone who over the ten years here sold lots of stuff in "Offers/Wanted' and even won a prize.

I think that some people believe that everyone in the IT crowd must be like this:

I just can't help thinking about asking Siri what's zero divided by zero
Reality is that people do not understand "publishing". I am not running a website, I am "publishing". This involves costs in terms of my time (which I dedicate a fair amount, every day, no weekends or holidays, including moderating, coding, posting, answering queries), colocation, CDN, SSL certificates, software licenses, email, travel when required to attend some event (and when not sponsored), etc.
Advertising doesn't require one to "click". There are various different types - CPM, CPA, CPC and so on.
Looking at our numbers we have between 35% and 45% ad blockers. I do have the option of not seeing ads myself but I chose to see ads. I actually don't have an ad blocker on my main browser. I like seeing the ads on Geekzone because I personally guarantee that you won't see crap ads like the ones that appear in some large NZ sites (those "You're visitor # 1,000,000" or "You're a guaranteed smartphone winner"). I like that our ads are on topic, and if any of those make me unhappy I remove them from rotation.
I also resent people saying we have too many ads. The frontpage has three. The news pages have four. Forum pages have more but I made sure to optimize delivery. In the last few weeks I removed four different scripts used to track analytics and response times. I optimized other two scripts. I changed all our resources (images, scripts, CSS) to be served over SSL so if you have a compatible browser those will be loaded over HTTPS/2, which means a single connection with parallel downloads. In all our pages are faster than ever and faster than the majority of other New Zealand sites.
I spend evenings looking at how our pages load, just to make sure I can remove something else.
Obviously, for some, no amount of dedication is worth.
Guess what? I ran out of damns to give some time ago.

@freitasm unfortunately you're always going to get some selfish/scroogy people who don't appreciate all the work that someone like you puts into a site like GZ. Many, many of us here appreciate what you do (speaking for myself here, even if I don't understand a lot of the technical side of what you just said above). Please don't let the negative nay-sayers get to you!
Just think: without geekzone, we'd probably all have to go get lives or something!
MikeB4: For over eight years I administered an international Linux related website that had over One million members. It was a very busy site, I would put in atleast three hours work ( unpaid) per day , seven days per week.
I remember seeing you there
I ended up subscribing as I was running a 3rd party script blocker and a large Hosts file with lots of add servers listed in it. Easier than figuring out which scripts needed to be allowed for the adds to even load. And even if I did click on an add, it would 404 due to the hosts file.
As for site loading speed - can vouch for that when I was in Samoa with a phone that didn't support 3G 900Mhz. Geekzone was about the only site that still had reasonable load speeds on 2G Edge.
I just turned my adblocker off and I get this video clip of surfing and when I move my mouse over it, it takes up the whole screen. Turned the adblocker on again. Don't mind ads, but ones that take over your screen so you can't see the page? Hmmmm.
