Strangely enough Firefox thread CPU usage on that page (no GZ open) ~2-5%. Firefox thread CPU usage on GZ alone ~20-25%.

I understand the user experience is regardless of source, but I am also saying that I have the site open in multiple tabs and I never had problems.

Note that by "problems" I mean the rendering interfering with any other computer usage.

To be fair I have pulled the Telecom advertising and notified the agency about this.

And the point is? 20 - 25% of CPU utilisation is low. I come from an environment where we tended to use 90% flat, 24/7 because it just means using all resources available.

That's why we have OSes with threading - everything gets a slice of time and will do its job.

I am not saying it's good to have a single page using more CPU than others - and I think the problem is the Telecom flash advert which is now out of the rotation. But I never complained about my computer doing its work. Of course a complete different thing would be a loop pegging to the CPU and causing the whole machine to stop. But I haven't seen this - and I test on many different machines around here.

Ah... at least the Flash ads have been reduced in number (not completely gone yet though - one example is the MS Visual Studio 08 ads, which I know won't go away that fast...)

I am interested to find out how you "know" it won't go away that fast?

FYI the Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 ad finishes in a couple of days.

What's the problem with ads folks? Really, do you guys have any idea how much it cost to run a site with the number of page impressions and bandwidth we use?

Nothing's wrong with ads in general, but it's the ads themselves.

Sure, websites need some sort of external revenue (like ads and sponsorships...), and I know that ads are externally processed (though profiles can be edited to provide more focused content)... which is why I have to put up with such things.

You quoted the page for comparison, not me :)

All I was saying was that for me GZ was more resource intensive than the page you quoted, as presumably something you would think was more resource intensive. Nothing more, nothing less.

I pointed to that page because someone commented on the number of scripts we have on Geekzone - and I was just demonstrating that we actually have very little compared with other pages. Another comment was on use of AJAX - which we don't have any at the moment.

The whole thing was clogged up because of one ad which is no longer being shown.

Here's my way to show the sweet, sweet proof:
- Firefox 2.0.0.13/Win, all addons disabled, cache cleared at start.
- AMD Turion64 2.0GHz, 512MB RAM

Pictures (don't look at the percentage reading, but the graph. Also the huge spike at the start always happens, so ignore that):

Firefox with absolutely nothing:

A trip to Geekzone:

Now, scrolling seems to really do something... 100% utilisation? (maybe Flash ads? maybe Firefox? I'll look into this later):

Now for the biggie - loading 10 tabs (I've closed Task Manager, so the graph can be refreshed):

- Ready state... about to begin (not much, so I've made the pic smaller)

- Loading... (here we go...)

- Finished!

I think it's great... what do you think? Is it close (or way off) than your conclusions?

Because the chart goes up and down I think it shows Firefox rendering the page - if it was something else I would expect the utilisation to stay pretty much linear instead of going back down.

When exactly did the Telecom Ads disappear?

In your previous post you said that the CPU usage on GZ alone was "~20-25%" and that you used "Firefox 2.0.0.13."

Firefox 2.0.0.13 was released ~~yesterday~~ less than 24 hours ago, how could CPU usage like that change so suddenly? Hmm...
