nitrotech:

It's an interesting point but what is news in 2016? - if you look at nz herald or stuff there is a lot of opinion that is on the front page.

it's an interesting quandary for the GZ community.

I agree regarding NZH and Stuff. A lot of what they print is opinion not news. It's a race to the bottom so far as journalism goes.  I guess you get what you pay for.

Certainly an interesting quandry for GZ.  I know I hardly ever bother clicking on any of BB's articles any more, much less read them right through. I've discovered his articles are so full of biased opinion they certainly don't stack up as news. Occasionally I see one of his headlines and think it might be news and worth reading. Sadly most of the time it is opinion masquerading as news and I don't bother reading past the first few sentences. Much like I do with a lot of the NZH and Stuff "news" articles.

I don't know what the point of the Bill Bennett stuff is. It's not news, it's not opinion, it's quite derivative, it's not interesting, it's clearly not journalistic. What's the point of it?

While I agree with the gist of what your saying, it's hardly a quandary - more a matter of semantics.

Edit: response to nitrotech & technofreak.

The point is quite simple, freedom of speech.

Same. While he may appear to be biased, he puts in positives for the opposite side as well. Perhaps as he is mainly an Apple user, there is also bias from the Apple dislikers?

In any case its free speech, he makes some interesting points, and there is a comments section if required

I read his posts here and get value out of them, and the comments on them, but..

Can people please stop declaring it's free speech.  This is the second comment touting this irrelevant notion.  He can post to his heart's content on his own website, no-one I can see is saying he should stop, as I understand it are just questioning the value of seeing it here given it's not news.  And something (his posts) being featured in a specific location (this web site) is not free speech, and has nothing to do with free speech.  If free speech got content into the news/article stream here, then we would all have the right to inject any old crap there.

Pardon me for speaking. The choice to allow Bills stuff to be here is by way of the owner of GZ, so the free speech, is now here also. As regards saying any old crap here, there is a FUG, so that people who take it upon themselves to post, their free speech, can do so within those guidelines. Quite simple.

I don't even see what the discussion is about. Different sites have different content. Bennett's articles are part of the content here. Who cares how they are labelled? That is the prerogative of the site owner. Free speech also means freedom to ignore. If you don't like it, don't read it. Time to move on.

tdgeek: We're getting a little off topic but I think you and rmt38 are really saying the same thing.

There is a FUG for Geekzone and this prohibits discussion on certain things. If you want to play in the GZ sandpit you abide by the GZ FUG. The fact there is FUG with restrictions on what can be discussed by definition means the term free speech cannot in the strict sense be applied to posting on GZ.

The articles appearing on Geekzone do so at Mauricio's pleasure, which is entirely appropriate as his prerogative as the owner. But they cannot be considered free speech as someone has a say whether or not they are displayed on Geekzone.

I agree, many of Bill pieces are opinion and not news. There's too much bias for them to be anything but opinion.  I think the vast majority of his items best fit in the blog section.

Yes agreed on opinion and bias. Should be a blog in my opinion.

My main issue is the articles appear as news with no indication as the where they are sourced from/written by. I see most of the headlines as click bait.  The latest headline is for a BB article that is really a Samsung and Android bashing article, and no I'm not an Android nor Samsung fan, far from it in fact.

Yes freedom to ignore, but until you click on the article you don't know who the author is. I feel conned almost every time I click on a GZ news item headline. I think GZ is a good quality site but is being let down by some of the opinion pieces masquerading as 'news' articles.

Apart from the Forums, there really isn't any need to visit geekzone on a daily or even weekly basis.  Content is hard to find, the Bill Bennett articles are the same quality as you get in stuff ( for better or worse) so is good for geekzone to have.  Between us all we could write better articles, but judging by the paucity of blog posts that won't happen.

No.  I am saying that the term free speech has nothing to do with Bill Bennett's articles appearing here.  And if anyone has used it to justify them appearing here, then they do not understand what free speech is.  Practically every reference to free speech in this topic is wrong, and people bringing in "freedom to ignore" highlights this.

Free speech isn't necessarily what you think it is.  And for that matter, we do not have the right to free speech in New Zealand.  There are laws that restrict what you can say.  The laws restricting where you can say things, on the other hand, are an unrelated matter and not related to what free speech is considered to be.

All well and good to make claims to be able to do something better than someone else, but until you do, it's all just words right?
