Days are mostly gone when forums were run for the joy and benefit of the community. Still a few around. For example, one in this space: whirlpool.net.au.

Sites with excessive advertising get the technology applied that they deserves in my opinion.

Google is mounting a challenge to them and I suspect we will all see some changes in the near future whether the sites like it or not :)

Interesting opinion. I've been running Geekzone for almost 15 years (in a few months) and we always had advertising, from day one. We do not rely on money for "sponsored content" and are fiercely independent from any company - which means we do have to rely on ad revenues to pay the platform users benefit from when getting help from others or from companies. This platform has many, many parts and they aren't free.

I assume your talking about the Chrome built-in ad blocker they are bringing in soon?
I think this is mainly to stop "aggressive" non-conforming ads. So they say.
Probably more to force people to use Google Adsense instead of other ad providers.

I was searching for something technical a few days ago and ended up on a technical site with multiple 'russian women' type ads. Tried to click away and accidentally hit one of the ads. Great. Now every site thinks I'm interested and is serving me 'russian women' ads.

I noticed and used for the first time that Google feature to close unwanted ads and request no more of those. It actually worked. After a few clicks on the offenders I'm back to the usual tech related ad stuff.

First time I used it but it appeared to work as intended.

Yes. It will be interesting to see how/where it ends up. But I hope it at least brings it under control.

I don't have the problem as I don't click on ads - so am quite happy to not see them either...but on the occasion I do, I really see the difference (speed, formatting, broken websites, intrusive noise etc) that many become tuned out to - which leads to them being less effective, which leads to the need for more "aggressive" ads...

Completely out of control in my opinion.

Simple, small, focused ads I would live with, anything else, nope.

Some people know full well about the cost of running a "platform", some even larger than this, and about how ads work. But still take offence to ads being far too intrusive.

Misquoted, but it helps me surf the net more efficiently, more quickly, and much more "quietly".

I am all for option - you have the option of using an Adblocker but I am the one who knows how much it costs to run the site so people don't have to post their ideas without any knowledge of the existing context, plans or projects. When people come around trying to be helpful but actually being snarky (and hypocritical as in complaining about ads but running ads on their own site - even blocking people with adblockers on their own site) then I don't see why continue this conversation.

Clearly a touchy subject for you, but if you re-read my posts, you'll see my comments are more general and not specifically directed at 'your' "platform". I'm not sure if your comment was directed at me, but I can assure you it doesn't apply :(

Rather than being so defensive, why not ask, and listen for opinions - it might actually help your cause. Taking the bat and ball approach is a bit sad in my opinion.

I actually ask and listen. In the last few months we actually REMOVED two ad positions from the forum pages - while making changes for faster page loads. The OP had a problem with a big advertiser (Vodafone) using annoying ads and I moved to block those ads - you can imagine that Vodafone ads would be a bit more pricier than others but it's the experience that counts.

So, yes I think this is a touchy subject because despite always trying to improve and making sure to respond when people complain about something, there is always someone (not you but the person banned before) that thinks they know more about this than myself. I tell you, they don't.
