A +1 is earned. If you want Likes and Hearts... Well there's Facebook and Instagram for that.

Look at the Geekzone Dashboard for the top +1 earners.

How is @sbiddle coming second? All he does is complains.

We need to get some fraud checking implemented on the +1 system.

My sense of self worth is directly proportional to my +1 ratio.

I do take note of the proportions of upvotes displayed for each user. High proportions - for me that is more than 1 in 3 - are generally a good indicator of quality posts. I observe, but have no data to support this, that those users seem to get more upvotes because users we trust them and don't have to check their replies as rigorously as if they were users we were not so familiar with. Low ratios aren't so reliable because many simply indicate infrequent or disparate involvement.

I don't see that most +1s are "hard earned". The quality of writing doesn't seem to affect upvoting as much as how it appeals in other ways.

The most constant use and the highest ranked posts in any thread are generally humorous, as above https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=48&topicid=250551&page_no=1#2238819, and often off-hand.

Expressions of outrage and high emotion seem to get a lot too. Perhaps because we can identify with the sentiment. Anyway, the most likely place for such topics is the Off Topic forum which has, by far, the most upvotes: 64K, 46K ahead of the next highest.

I'd be interested to see a more detailed analysis of +1s by forum.

I agree with Hammerer. I look at the ratio too. Its not how many +1 or how many posts but how many people resonated with.

Yeah, I recall there was a thread about adding a -1 option a year or so back but the end decision was to not go there.

I was thinking of this today when I read a post in the Jeremy Kyle thread - I didn't have the energy to respond but certainly thought it deserved a big -1!

thanks all !

Got a much better understanding of the Geek zone ethos.

Will take it into consideration.

I'm a mad +1 fan, as an encouragement to discuss, debate. As an independent journo, sometimes that's all I can afford to 'pay'. But if debate is a 'given' on this platform then will try and restrain myself from treating gz same as other social networks.

thanks again,

jas

Yeah, I think you're partially correct...  I too would be quite interested in more detailed analysis of +1s.

I try as hard as possible to +1 posts that seem well thought out and written, but have to constantly fight the urge to +1 purely on agreeing with a sentiment or point of view expressed.

I think it's human nature to do this.... I seem to recall some fairly interesting research recently about the tendency for social platforms and +1 type systems and the internet in general leading to more and more people living their lives in an extremely insular environment (whether you look at facebook or instagram feeds or even your google suggested news items) - essentially it's much easier these days to surround yourself with a large group of  "friends" who all agree with your point of view, so most peoples online experiences (and day to day experiences as a result) are getting more and more echo-chamber like.

If +1 gets you excited, you're going to love moanmyip.com [Do not click at work]

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

I did not know about the stats on the dashboard - that's cool. What is this though? IE with 25M? Does this stat reset at any stage?
